Does anybody make their own peanut/nut butters?greenspun.com : LUSENET : Countryside : One Thread |
Do you need a special grinding machine to do it? And does it come out creamy? Please post any information that you have. Thanks.

I have made my own peanutbutter in either a food processor or blender. Very easy, very good!

I just recently made my first batch of peanut butter. I started with two lbs. of raw peanuts and roasted them on a flat pan in the oven for probably 15 to 20 minutes checking and stirring them frequently to make sure they didn't burn.I put all but about a handful in my food processer and "pulsed" while adding peanut oil a few drops at a time. Also tossed in about 1/2 tsp. of salt. Once the butter was the consistancy I wanted, I chopped the handful of leftover nuts by knife (to get chunky peanut butter) and added that.
The next day, I sent DH to work with a PB & J sandwich made with homemade bread, homemade jelly and homemade peanut butter. BTW, it was really good but not as sweet as store bought. We liked it a lot. I've been told the oil might separate after storing, but just stir it up if that happens. Ours didn't stay around long enough to separate.
Wishing you enough.

I've made peanut butter using a hand-cranked meat grinder. It takes some muscle and is a pain to clean afterwards, but it works fine.

Katherine, my mother used to clean the meat grinder by grinding a piece of bread when she was finished doing the meat. Then all she had to do was swish the grinder in hot soapy dishwater. Might that work for peanuts as well?

I made my first batch of almond butter earlier this summer and it was great. Dianne, you roasted your peanuts first, was that for flavor? I didn't roast the almonds, didn't know that you were supposed to do that. I wonder what the difference would be? I used my Champion Juicer to do it all. I did store it in the refrigerator, but it never separated. I also added a pinch of salt. Dianne, I hope your hubby realizes that he is spoiled!! LOL Marie

I use roasted peanuts and a Braun hand held mixer/processor with the chopping wheels installed. Can do a jar in about five minutes after the roasting is done.

I believe that raw nuts contain enzyme inhibitors, which can weigh heavily on the digestive system at some point. I prefer to roast my nuts for that reason, and they really do taste better roasted anyway, IMHO.I actually am just about to try making my own nut butter, so thanks for the info on doing that :-)

Yes, Marie. I realize DH is spoiled but believe me, he's worth it! I roasted mine because I don't care for the taste of raw peanuts. Roasting them (IMO) makes them taste better.Wishing you enough.
