greenspun.com : LUSENET : Countryside : One Thread

Hi,

I happened to be surfing through the local ph comapny's website, actually was looking for an e-mail directory when I came upon this link for the Ozarks History. I clicked it on and came upon this link for a magazine now out publication called, Bittersweet. Its really neat, lots of old country lore, recipies, tales, really neat stuff. And best of all you can view all 10 yrs of issues online from the library in MO that has the issues there. Its a student based pub;lication and similiar to Foxfire.

Heres the link: http://198.209.8.166/sheproom/periodicals/bittersweet/bsw.htm

Thank you for this. I especially liked Vol 4 #15. The old quilt patterns are wonderful. Also the discussion of country meals. Note that all leftovers were fed to the animals. Everything was used and store-bought superdiet dog food wasn't even invented yet! Imagine that! (my dog cats and animals still eat that way)

Trying to access page but having no luck, it sounds neat! :)

Has anyone else found this page lately? I'm just not having any luck and would like to get hold of the issues with the old quilt patterns in them. Been working on a couple of oldies from The Kansas City Star and enjoying them tremendously! Especially the 1932 Democratic Mule and republican Elephant. Thanks!

This was really neat. Thank you for posting! I really liked the apple butter and taffy-pulling articles. GT

I tried the link several times. it works for me. i will keep trying, i think I'll try to add it to my website and then hopefully it can be displayed from there. i was amazed at all the interesting stuff in these magazines and the amount of not only work but time involved in the endeavor. I liked the recipies and lore stuff. Even the how to butchering sections too. You're all so welcome. I had to share after i discovered it, its just so neat.

I tried and got the dreaded white screen so I went around the corner and found a back door.... try /bswtoc.htm instead of /bsw.htm

Oh thank you Bernice! I resisted going into the site until I had worked in the garden for an hour or so! Now, it's too hot to weed anymore, so I found a glass of iced tea and visited the site. It's going to be a wonderful place to explore! I have a few good memories of the Ozarks as my second huband was from Missouri. The people are wonderful! (I won't comment on him!) Thank you again!

Bernice - Thanks so much for this site info. I graduated from a Missouri HS in 1976 and our College Prep teacher was very interested in this type of research and writing from HS students. Our class did our own version for a whole quarter. It was alot of fun. This brought back alot of memories. Thanks again so much. I'll have fun reading these! Winona
