who runs Shorter College UAPB or the AME churchgreenspun.com : LUSENET : A.M.E. Today Discussion : One Thread |
I would like for someone to tell me what is the status of Shorter College? Who is in charge, the AME church or who.

As I understand it, Shorter College is a part of the AME Church. The current president is Dr. Cora McHenry. Based on my limited knowledge, she is a distinguished educator who is committed to the effective running and operation of this institution. Dr. McHenry can be reached at 501-374-6305. I am sure that she would welcome the assistance of everyone interested in lifting Shorter to a new level of academic excellance.

According to their beautiful web site, Shorter was founded in 1873 in Rome, Georgia as the CHEROKEE BAPTIST FEMALE COLLEGE. It moved to its present Rome hilltop location in 1910. It admitted men in the early 1950's. It is additionally stated that "Although Shorter College is an institution of the Georgia Baptist Convention, there are no denominational requirements for enrollment." Hope that helps.Shalom, Harold Turner

I think we are being confused by the names of two different institutions here. Shorter College, the HBCU, is an AME School whose location is listed on page 609 of the 2000-20004 Book of Discipline as being in North Little Rock, Arkansas. It also lists Mrs. Cora McHenry as the Interim President. Since this information was current at General Conference 2000 she might well now be President as Dr. Santucci stated above.
