We are looking for something to plant near our house. We have an area in our yard that is shaded from 10am until sunset by a large tree. The soil is sandy and not very good, it has a small amount of black sand on top. We would like to plant something there to liven up the area a bit, but we are not too good at flowers. We would like suggestions on what will grow well in the mostly shady area. We would like smaller plants, not much over a foot tall if possible. If it is a perennial, all the better. Bob, you might try a variety of Hosta. They are shade loving plants and come in all heights. They are a perennial, which is what you want. You should improve the soil you will be growing them in tho, as they require a rich, moist, neutral, will-drained soil. Also maybe planting English Ivy? It will produce a dense, dark, green cover. Plant several of these ivies now, and in a few years they should cover that entire area under your tree. What a cool oasis that will be on a hot summer afternoon. Consider growing something which is also edible, like mint. It smells wonderful! There are many kinds of mint, so choose one you like- peppermint, spearmint, applemint- and surely a friend or neighbor will be glad to share roots with you. Mint is perennial.
