Is there anybody who can explain me what FD stands for? Can I use Canon-FD-Objectives for a AE-1?
-- M. Michaelis (redmarc79@gmx.de), July 19, 2001
Yes, FD lenses work on the AE-1, as do Canon FL lenses and R lenses. EF lenses do not work on Canon manual-focus cameras like the AE-1. I have no idea what the initials stand for (R is probably "reflex"; FD lenses have an auto diaphragm, so maybe the "D" alludes to this fact; no idea about FL).

The way it was explained to me, FD stands for "full diaphragm". These were the first lenses that allowed metering at the widest aperture of whatever lens was attached; the lens stopped down to the metered aperture the instant the picture was taken. Before these lenses came along, you had to use stopped-down metering.Don't know if FL stands for anything.
