My husband and I bought our place seven years ago here in southern vermont, and began turning the woods into a homestead. Another couple, good friends of ours, moved onto the land about two years ago and we've been homesteading together since then. We have a long way to go toward self-sufficiency, but we think it has been successful so far!

We have solar power, a great root cellar, a large garden, chickens & bees. We have lots more plans, for a greenhouse, dairy animals, etc., but we've been spending a lot of time clearing land and building timber frame houses and a garage/shop! Hopefully the construction part will be done soon, and we can expand the self- sufficiency aspect a lot more.

Having another couple here has been a great help financially and in terms of the work load. Of course, there are challenges too, but for the most part it's been fun! We are also looking for another person or couple to join us soon, as we now have a small house available.

Good luck, Chet. With hard work and the right people, it can be done! I'd be happy to help if you have any questions.

Hey Chet, I live just an hour drive from Seneca. I may not be interested in moving there just yet, but would like to come an visit sometimes to see how everything is going. That is if you can get one going. I tried to talk my in-laws into forming a community of our own. I thought it would be very handy if we could all live together on one large property and support each other with our seperate skills. But I couldn't get them out of town. They didn't want to miss the conveniency of being able to run to wal-mart right fast. So instead we all live on seperate property and pay more taxes and pay more babysitting, etc. Good luck! I use to have a sister who lived just north of Senaca, right next to spook light road.
