The gusette is doing media at school, NOT to become a journalist, making films etc.She has asked me to find some software. It is very expensive here. If anyone is going to be in places where software is sold can they let me know where and what it costs please.
I do not want anyone to go out of their way like, just over the next week or so. I told her I will see over the school holidays, they start today for 2 weeks.
The software is video editing software called "Final Cut Pro for McIntosh. For some reason they all use Macs for film stuff.
Hoping to be the proud parent of the next Peta Greenaway!!

gus, despite constant abuse, i'd be delighted to look into it - what Apple Mac are they using and most importantly, which system version [probably 8.6 or 9.0 or 9.1]?
there's another question but that's best saved for yer email....

Hiya min,They have imacs I believe and the new laptops. I was at the parent teacher night, can't remember which one I was, her media teacher said she should look at getting this software as it was the latest industry standard and would cost in the region of $700. Thats all I know. Any other technical stuff I cannot find out until school returns in 2 weeks!
gus
Still drinking and falling over I read min. BTW stay away from Gav, I think he fancies lasses!

$700 is a lot for software to be used in a student capacity. You might be aware Gus that Microsoft sells student licences for much of it's software and the discounts are very substantial. Is there nothing available from the vendors (Apple?) of this product? Presumably the Gusette's teacher would be aware of this.Failing that is there any way of contacting the vendor to ask for an evaluation copy of the software? - you could explain your reasons. At $700 for a student project it is clear that software companies DESERVE piracy.

That is why I am asking here jonno, $700 is outrageous. However, if the school can use it after her I might donate it to the school. Or the teacher has said that the school might buy it for everyone, but $700 is too much. The teacher said for things like this they ask for money from the P & C commitee.
I will try the Apple site from home. It has to be this software as they only rum Imacs and Ibooks for the school.

If the software vendor fails to come up with a better deal than this it would be a disgrace. That price is fine (possibly very cheap) for a pro working in the field and earning from their use of the product. A student is a different kettle of ballgames and the vendor should realise that all those students are potential future pros and any help the vendor gives will surely put them in a favourable light with those future pros when they come to buying software for themselves/their employers. I'm really surprised the school hasn't got a better deal than this. Or maybe $700 is the better deal? A student licence for Microsoft Office is £125 compared to the full price of over £400.

Final Cut Pro over here costs around £600. It's probably cheaper in the States. It is good software but certainly not 'industry standard'. The broadcast industry mostly use AVID systems.I edit on Adobe Premiere and Speedrazor both of which come in Mac versions and are cheaper than Final Cut.There is another Mac-based software package called Media 100 which is also very good.
With the advent of DV the software manufacturers are falling over themselves to produce cheaper systems. Sounds as if the school should do a little more research.

...just what i was going to say Dread. That mate of mine who's an editor uses AVID mainly.Final Cut Pro is an Apple software package which was shipped free with the imacs sold over the last two years - just part of its popularity. [playing MS at their own game?]
I'm surprised it wasn't included with the school's computers and i'd get on to the retailer to find out why. Apple do have an 'education' arm and have been more than happy to dish out computers and software to schools in the US. Get onto Apple Oz and see what they can do - i wouldn't be surprised to hear you get a load of copies for free or at a huge discount....

Thanks dread, I will be enquiring with Apple tonight (my time) and following up with a phone call tomorrow.I think the teacher probably meant it was the standard application for Apple!
I have to wait for school to return in 2 weeks to raise the points you made. I will also look at the other software availability here.
At 600 quid that makes it about A$1600.
jonno, valid points also. I will be making a combination of these posts to put some pressure on
Who would have thought min would have a use?
