Response to wormer

Hi Lori.. Yes, Valbazen (albendazole) liquid can be used on goats, although it's not safe for pregnant does. Safeguard paste (fenbendazole) is a good broad-spectrum dewormer as well...it isn't labeled for goats either... I use Safeguard at triple the goat's weight. Ivermectin is safe in the injectable used orally, the pour- on, and the paste (labeled for cattle and horses). There are many products used "off label" for goats. Hope this helps.. :)patty Prairie Oak Miniatures http://www.minifarm.com/prairie_oak

I use valbazen or tramisol. Last year I could only use tramisol because there was an immunity in our area to both the ivomentic products or all the panacur products. This year I have used the valbazen and I think all is okay although I should get a fecal sample to make sure.

Hi Lori, this is another regional answer. Here in East Texas I use Valbazen at 8cc per 100 pounds with a really nice kill. Safeguard in any of the forms used at 5 times the dosage gives me only a kill in the 40 to 60 percent range, so that is really expensive and ineffective. I am also just not a fan of the pastes, you are really guessing at the amount you are giving, it is harder to make sure they have truly swallowed the paste compared to the very small amount of liquid you give of Ivermectin 1% Cattle injectable, 2cc per 100 pounds. Even Valbazen comes in a paste form, but I choose to use the liquid. They have no wormers labeled for goats that work in our area. Vicki

Vicky, I am giving 9cc to 150 pd sheep, I had a horrible time with parasite last year, do you think that is too small a dosage. I am thinking maybe goats take more? I had no luck with safeguard even with I tripled the dose for three days in a roll. I too stay away from paste. I do use paste for the horses but the cattle and sheep either get shots (cattle) or liquid. WHAT EVER ANYONE DOES DO NOT BOTHER WITH IVOMENTIC DRENCH FOR LAMBS. It was water on my animals. Also, the Pipestone vet says Tramisol is probably the only wormer you need to be accurate on the animal's weight. Probably because it works in eigth hours so is probably not so good the heart. I really don't know just guessing.
