debra in ks knew a Phyllis and someone else who welcomed me said their mother's name was Phyllis. I didn't know this was such a popular name but I've grown rather fond of it and glad to hear there are others.

I'm always surprized when I meet or hear of another Polly - it wasn't a real popular name when I was growing up. My first name came from Pop's side of the family (his Granny and Sister) and my middle name came from Mama's (her Gramps) - and I've never gone by either one!!

My class (of 32 students) had 3 Kathy's and 5 Debbie's; plus 4 Dave's and 4 Mike's. My daughter's class has 4 Jessica's and ONE Jessie - not that I can convince them that it is JUST JESSIE!! She was named after kin, darn it - not some TV actress! (But I'm fine now....)

I know we have some duplicated names here on the forum - I'll have to check the age posting and see if you guys are close together in age...

So okay everyone - tell how you got your name!

My mother, in her infinite wisdom, named her first-born daughter after the neighbor's dog Cherie. She Americanized the spelling though.

My middle name, Lynn, is for my mom's sister Linda. Mom and Aunt Linda got real cute naming us kids, our names all kind of rhyme with each other.

The joke in our family is that the reason why I'm so different from my siblings is because I'm really the milkman's kid. (My dad drove a milk truck for several years)

I think I put my first answer in the wrong place. Here goes again. My first name is just to be similar to my older brother's name Phillip. My middle name Jean is after my dad Gene.

Well my real name is Terri. My dad always said Terri was a cute cheerleader he had a crush on in junior high. My middle name is Jo, same as my mom's. Yeah, I know, it's one of those cute redneck double names, Terri Jo...and some of my relatives still call me that. Cass is a nickname a friend gave me years and years ago, after a character in a story...no it's not short for anything...just Cass.

My parents names both begin with "J", so they named all three of their kids with "J" names too. Our brother is Jay (first-born), so when I came along, Joy seemed obvious (but it made trouble in school, where people wrote A and O similarly, and we were only one grade apart). Julie was possibly going to be Josephine (had a Grandpa Joe), but when Mom saw her, she thought Julie fit better. At least that's Mom's story.

My middle name is Elizabeth. Mom said that she just picked middle names that sounded well with our first and last names, and that would be viable alternatives should we decide we didn't like our first names when we were adults. I've never been able to "see" myself as Elizabeth, or Eliza or Liza or Beth or Betty, so I've never want to change to one of those alternatives.

Well, ummm. lessee...My mom took one look at me and the attitude expressed on my face at birth and declared: "My, she's a little sheepish" and so the name stuck.

Does that work?

Okay, my real name is a combination of the first and last names of one of my mom's students (she is a retired teacher.) So, if her student's name was May Belle, I got to be Maybelle...but you know that's not my name!

I like Sheepish. It really suits me, as I feel that way a lot, plus I have these critters! But I don't want to be in the same "class" as Madonna, Cher, or Dumbya and others who only go by one name!

And Polly, is your new friend my mom???????????!!!!!!!!!!!!!! Same dang name!!! Sheesh! (sorry Tren...it's popular, eh???)

Sharon is my real name. No coyness ;o)

I have no idea why I got called that but I always liked my name.I expect it is from the bible, but I never asked. The youngest three have names starting with S, but I do not know if that has any signifence.Guess I'll ask!

3 other Sharon's in my class of 97,but now it's an old fashion name.

Hummingbird would always nest in the Rose of Sharon,so that made me feel like my name was special, somehow.

I was named after my big brothers girlfriend at the time of my arriving. At least her name wasn't Maude.

My mother had originally planned to name me Martha Susan, but when I was born, the nurses and my grandmother all said I didn't "look" like a Martha Susan, so I hung around the hospital for 5 days with no name! Just before leaving, Mama was told that she had to give me a name, so she told my grandmother to pick one for me. She chose Dianne (actually Mama spells it Diann; I added the "e" in high school.) which was unusual at the time. It came from a radio soap opera my grandmother listened to. She hadn't heard it anywhere else. When I started first grade, there were 6 of us!!!
