HI I was wounderin was E.A Poe on cocaine when he wrote most of his poems?

I'm not sure, however, he makes reference to opiate use, in "The Fall of the House of Usher"; "with an utter depression of the soul which I can compare to no earthly sensation more properly than to the after dream of the reveller upon opium--the bitter lapse into everyday life- -the hideous dropping of the veil." also "His voice varied rapidly from a tremulous indecision (when the animal spirits seemed utterly in abeyance) to that species of energetic consision--that abruptly, weighty, unhurried, and hollow-sounding enunciation--that leaden, self-balanced and perfectly modulated guttural utterance, which may be observed in the lost drunkard, or the irreclaimable eater of opium, during periods of his most intense excitement." His reference to drunkenness, of which he was intimately familiar, suggests to me that he may have experienced opium, of which cocaine is derivative Is it not?

I think that edgar alan poe is very intersting, and fun to read...i have read ALL of his books and poems, i have many of his books

You may find some relevant information on the Edgar Allan Poe Society of Baltimore site at: http://www.eapoe.org I'm afraid you will find that any awards celebrating Poe's work would have been awarded posthumously with the exception of two stories for which he won a monetary award. The stories were "The Gold Bug" and "Ms Found in a Bottle." The Newberry Medal is awarded for contributions to children's literature and I believe started in the 1920s, quite some time after his death in 1849.

I do not belive that just because poeple cross the thin line that poe often walked on and over doesnt nessacealily make a person sick or twisted i belive that just because he choose to make his imagery not a bright and pretty one but yet with sick and grotesqe thoughts painted for you, just makes him diffrent maybe not in todays society but in the victorian ara it made him a mad man. i belive he painted the pictures the way he felt they needed to be painted. people write what they live and poe didnt live in a fantasy or fairytale land his tradgidies really did happen and his addiction to opium was juss a tool he used to cope with fear and death.

no, i dont think to believe that poe was on cocaine when he wrote these stories b/c he wasnt like most authors he didnt write stories that end in "and they lived happily ever after" and that shocks people he wrote books about real life experiences the up and downs of life so i think he a deep man w/knowlegde that everybody could use some from him
