I finally got a friend to record Princess Mononke for me. I'm so glad I got to see it. I understand why anime fans would get mad at stupid people that laughed at the violence in it(if you don't know what I am talking bout you should have read Animerica a year ago). About the closest I ever got to laughing(I didn't laugh but it was a little funny sounding) was when the ape tribe said something about the 'man creature'. I guess it was just because I've never heard humans called man creatures. I'm a dragon but I don't call humans 'man creatures'. Neither did Moro's tribe or Okkoto's tribe. My friend that recorded it for me said he always laughs at the kodamas(the tree spirits). Then again he's the type of 'anime fan' that likes DragonBall Z(his site is here it really sucks so you can laugh at it all you want). I consider him a 'wannabe'. Anyway I should get back on topic and say I think that Princess Mononoke was one of the best movies I've ever seen(right up there with The Matrix!). If you haven'y seen it you MUST go rent it A.S.A.P.

The DVD version kicks so much ass it's not even funny. Just remember, it takes two shots to kill a god.

Ok -- if you liked Princess Mononoke, have you seen 'My Neighbor Totoro', 'Nausicaa - Warrior of the Wind', any of the Lupin III movies (liked 'Cagliostro Castle' best), or 'Kiki's Delivery Service'?Same values for the animation, altho the stories are quite different... Totoro and Kiki are pitched more for kids as an audience, but I'm quite fond of them just the same. Some friends tied me up and sat on me to make me watch 'em the first time around, but eventually I bought the cassettes for myself. I love to sit and stare at the artwork on the house, the woods, the sky....
Nausicaa is more in the spirit of Princess Mononoke.
Are there any anime fans who DON'T like Lupin? Well, I suppose so...but I'm willing to watch physical humor from time to time. It wasn't as manic as the Tv show was, but it was still lots of fun.

Sadly, Mononoke didn't find much of a N. American audience, thanks to limited release and an unfortunate PG-13 rating. Then there's the bigger, cultural problem of adults equating animation with sappy, all singing-all dancing Disney schlock. The huge irony behind our enjoyment of Mononoke involves Disney's purchase of rights to much of Miyazaki's Studio Ghibli output. Just how much effort will Buena Vista (Disney) put into quality dubs of uncut anime titles whose artistry and intelligence far excede anything the "House of Mouse" cranks out? Mononoke got rave reviews from mainstream critics such as Roger Ebert, who loves Studio Ghibli anime. Whether you like Ebert isn't the point; what matters is the size of his audience, his credibility, and his influence on a large potential cross-over audience for anime. As Remy said, the kid-oriented Miyazaki titles are real charmers.I've given Totoro and Kiki tapes to friends' kids who loved them, first for the sheer novelty but later for the stories themselves. If the Disney-Ghibli deal actually unfolds, there should be more to see in the next few years. Hooray Draconic!! I'm happy you finally got to see Mononoke. That is one of my favoriet movies in the world. It even has brilliant music; right after I saw it I went out and bought the soundtrack. On the subject of Miyazaki stuff, it's all great. I've only seen Mononoke, Totoro, the end of Kiki's delivery service, and one book of Nausicaa in comic form, but every one is really really good. I wish cartoons weren't all immediately labeled kid stuff, especially comic books, and all of Miyazaki's stuff. Hooray for Studio Ghibli!!!!
