greenspun.com : LUSENET : digital ink : One Thread

So, Katie seems to see how wonderful Dave is...how about the rest of you?? I was planning my day around watching him on Politically Incorrect tonight, but I started fighting with my boyfriend...to bad Dave is married, or else I bet I would be his first choice:-)

I'm Canadian. How can I not love Dave Matthews. He's practically close friends with people I know.

Oh lord.

What? He sucks! Actually, I don't think it's so much how bad he is as much as how much some people like him that makes me angry.

well.. i think he's attractive, but i don't really think about that.. i think more of the music. his music has such a great unique style to it.. where else are you going to hear such acoustics with guitar, violin, drums, and the such? it sounds beautiful live. you have to appreciate the music.. i mean, i guess it depends upon if you like a certain style of music.. i know that i'm personally sick of turning on my radio to hear rap or pop, and i'm heavily into classic rock.. so to hear dave matthews is a relief because its not someone who is trying to be another band.. it's not an n'sync or backstreet boys thing.. which is refreshing.. it's soothing music with well written lyrics.. dave matthews and foo fighters have a way w/ their music that is just.. there, you cant really explain it.

Ok, I am thinking I am sheltered, who is Dave Matthews?

-- Anonymous, June 03, 2001

There's plenty of other bands with wicked long wanky jam sessions and stupid pop-philosophy, but they also suck.

-- Anonymous, June 03, 2001

I liked his music long before I finally realized how attactive he is! I am going to a DMB concert tomorrow night!!!

-- Anonymous, June 03, 2001

I've only heard his two most recent radio hits, both of which I think are alright, but nothing brilliant. I don't really see what the fuss is about. And I think he's pretty average looking.

-- Anonymous, June 03, 2001

I like his music pretty well, not especially HIM, though...

-- Anonymous, June 04, 2001

So, Dan... what kind of music do you like? I'm interested because you're the first person I've ever met who really HATES DMB... met some who were indifferent, but no one who said they sucked or anything. Curious as to where your tastes lie.

-- Anonymous, June 04, 2001

eh, he's not bad looking for a guy that's WAY too old for me. I love the band's music, though. I have for years.

-- Anonymous, June 04, 2001

I liked the early stuff, but it all ended with "Crash" or whatever it's called. That "craaaaaaaash.. intooooo me" song. I hate it. With a passion. Not as much as I hate that "I Did It" song, though. If I so much as hear the first few notes, I go running down the street, screaming, stabbing sharp things into my ear canals. Thank God for Dan, I thought I was the only person on the planet who wasn't in love with him.

I like a lot of music, actually. It's what keeps me going, and so when people like Dave (I will call him by his first name like his fans do) take the artform I love and make it all watered down and crappy and banal with no feeling, I have no other choice but to hate it.

I'm listening to Portishead as I type. Last 2 records I bought were Neutral Milk Hotel and the first Smiths record. I like lots of stuff, uh, actually, I just gave a friend of mine a list, here she is, all copied and pasted:

the beatles, r.e.m., the smiths, elliott smith, ida, nick drake, aphex twin, bjork, cap'n jazz, kool keith/dr. octagon/whatever else he is calling himself these days (although he has been slipping recently), jeru tha' damaja, massive attack, portishead, promise ring, rufus wainwright, yo la tengo, boards of canada, the flaming lips, hayden, hum, sunny day real estate, pixies (should be way higher up on this list), radiohead, neutral milk hotel, bright eyes, and weezer. I think that covers it. If you read the list in order it's like a bizarre free association exercise.

There's plenty more that isn't on there, those are my favorites.

I agree with Dan, both on the fact that DMB sucks, AND with his list of music. w00t! Dan, do you like the Get Up Kids? How about Tricky?

-- Anonymous, June 05, 2001

Four Minute Mile is one of my favorite records, but Something to Write Home About didn't really get me, I dunno why. The Get Up Kids are good live though. I'm a fan of Tricky's solo stuff, too, but I haven't heard much aside from Maxinquaye (and that new song with the guy from Live makes me mad for some reason).

Oh, I will say in Dave Matthew's defense though that he is indeed a good looking man.

Dan,

Damn, dude, talk about stealing the thunder. After the Smiths and some of the other selections, I was all set to say "Oh, I see, you're one of those Emo Kids," but the list is a bit too eclectic to generalize. I liked "How Soon Is Now?" and Katie sent me "Asleep" and it was cool, but I don't know if I could rock out hard core to a vegetarian. There are a few bands on there that I like, and other folks that I haven't heard of. But it is easy to see why you wouldn't like DMB. They're a type of music that doesn't gel real easy with a lot of the music you like that I recognize - R.E.M. comes closest, I reckon.

At least no one here is denouncing Dave BECAUSE he's popular. Folks that put bands down because they achieve commercial success get no love from the Golfster. Limp Bizkit appears to be the I-hate-the-band-because-everyone-likes-them-group du jour. If you don't like Dave because the music just doesn't appeal to you, I'm cool with that. I guess. But I like Dave, and will always like Dave, even if he puts out a stinker or two like this last album.

Yes, I am a thunder thief. Only like 4 or so of those bands I would consider emo-ish, I dunno. If you wanna hear a good Smiths song, get "Please, Please, Please, Let Me Get What I Want," because it's my favorite. 'Cause I'm whiny like that.

You should also get "Last Night I Dreamt That Somebody Loved Me," because it's my second favorite Smiths song.

-dan (pondering what the world would be like if DMB were the Stephen Patrick Morrissey Band)

-- Anonymous, June 05, 2001

Everyone would be so depressed, we wouldn't be able to stand it. :)

-- Anonymous, June 06, 2001

Hmm.. their popularity is a terribly reason to hate Limp Bizkit. People should hate Limp Bizkit because they suck. :P

(And before I get flamed, because people here are likely to respond in such a way, my meaning is that *in my opinion*, they suck. heh.)

Okay, gotta ask this one.

I know who the Get Up Kids are because my first cousin happens to be Matt Pryor, lead singer. What is so good about their music? Their lyrics are trite, their music is dull, and Matt either screams or whines throughout entire songs into what sounds like a really bad microphone. This is good?

(p.s. I really do wanna know. I have a great interest in a wide range of music, including other emo bands. but I've never been able to get into Matt's band.)

Okay, sorry this is off-topic...

Did enjoy the pop/irony of Reggie and the Full Effect experimentation though done by The Get Up Kids. Just wanted to point that out. So they are capable of something that sounds somewhat... well, good.

Abbie again.

-- Anonymous, June 08, 2001

So, was that previous post submitted to indirectly gloat that Matt Pryor is your first cousin or are you actually interesed in knowing why his music is good?

-- Anonymous, June 11, 2001

Thom Yorke is my dad.

In response to Dave Matthews: I can't stand his music. At best, his music is painfully derivative, coming across as the bastard child of the Grateful Dead and bad worldbeat-pop crossover. At worst, it's proof that just because a band can play N different styles of music doesn't necessarily mean that they should, or that they can pull it off in a unpretentious manner.

In response to the question about the Get-Up Kids: I accuse them of the same crime that I think the majority of emo is guilty of. Emo has too many bands that think elliptical lyrics and non-sequiturs constitute complex songwriting. I get this feeling that the genre further consists of kids who constantly whine about their inability to get laid, but who do so in obtuse terms to appear somehow "sensitive". Most of the punk that made early emo an interesting mix of rage and despair has disappeared, replaced by fizzled pop played on guitars locked in the upper registers. Blah.

Yes, I know I'm a curmudgeon. There's a lot of music I like, but hardly any genres of music I can deal with.

Matt's an ass. Whether I was gloating or not, he's still an ass.

The real question to ask would be "aren't you subconsciously jealous of Matt and his success in music, because, after all, he has had success in music, while you on the other hand are yuppie scum?" That is the question. It's rather a bigger question. And it is somewhat ringing the bells of truth.

Can anybody tell me what's good about his music? I'll just sit here on my yuppie ass and pretend that I'm superior to him.

Interesting criticisms there about DMB, although it's funny because that's exactly the same reason I like them. I like that they can play X styles of music, and make me bop my head for each one. The worldbeat criticism is just another reason to like them. Same reason I like newer Peter Gabriel above most of that self-absorbed stuff he did with and right after Genesis.

That's not to say that I don't like Genesis; the majority of their popular stuff has made it's way in various forms to my MP3 drive at various times. It's everything that music in 2001 is NOT supposed to be. It's not supposed to be fun, not supposed to be overly synthesized and not industrial, and above all else, not supposed to be done by a band whose members are all old. Especially a balding lead singer like Phil Collins.

I wonder if the new guy singing in Genesis is balding.

I wonder if I'll stop digressing.

despite the fact that i'm a girl who is in college, i don't like dave matthews. when i was making a shopping list for my first semester of college, my friends and i wrote like, 'ecstasy, red bull, tight black pants, dave matthews band cds'.

anyway, i think his music is pretty bad and he really gives me the creeps.
