what wood cook stove(s) good for heating also?greenspun.com : LUSENET : Countryside : One Thread |
Anyone know of a good wood cook stove that is also good for heating? Someone else asked this question previously, but there were no responses. I've read good and bad about the Pioneer Maid. Any other stoves besides that one?

We use the pioneer maid and are very happy with it.

I have had, over the past 30 years, 5 wood cook stoves the best heater was a Waterford/Stanley, made in Ireland. It is truly as air- tight as a cook stove can get.

Our best find was a Kitchen Queen. Made by the Amish. New it cost about $1700. We got this one from a burned out farm house. (they were going to throw it away)!! We had to replace the enamel and insulation aroiundthe doors but it works great!! We use it to heat our 24 by 36 log cabin. The firebox is huge! Andthe oven is too. Ours has a warming shelf but we could order the warming oven if we want to. It only weighs about 600 pounds!!

Just look for one with a large enough wood box to burn wood or coal in otherwise you will be feeding it wood all the time. Good Luck !!

Any stove that alone is an effective space heater is going to be bad news in summer. Don't know how much of a concern this will be for you there, but it might be worth thinking either two separate systems - heating and (insulated) cooking, or else an insulated stove that also heats hot-water, and feeds that through a radiator.

most of my Amish neighbors have two pioneer maids, one in the kitchen and one in the "summer kitchen" porch. They sure seem to keep their homes warm and cook well too.

We have a Queen Atlantic, circa 1920. Excellent for cooking, tho' it did take me awhile to gauge the oven temp! Our house is a two-story 24x40 and this woodstove is our only source of heat. We live in downeast Maine....sometmes in the middle of January the mornings are a little "nippy", but bearable.

My vote goes to the Kitchen Queen. It is very well made, has great direction of air flow, big oven, reservoirs heat water great, perfect all around. We bought ours last summer, and got a good deal on it. I am in Ohio and these are made in Mid Michigan. We drove up with our horse trailer and picked up ours and seven others. The store we bought it from took the shipping charges from the other stoves off of our bill. Joanie
