"Little Big Man", "True Grit", "Rooster", "McClintok", " The Fighting Kentuckian" (Oliver Hardy plays against John Waynes character so well)"The Patriot", "Dr Dolittle" (both the original and Eddie Murphys remake), "Down Periscope" and Matrix II when it comes out this fall. And yes, I am a John Wayne fan.

Last Temptation of Christ.

Matrix, Blade Runner, Brazil.

Chinatown.

Indiana Jones series.

Just watched "Life is Beautiful." So is that film.

Babe.

I guess my favorite western is "Jerimiah Johnson."

I don't get to theaters much. If we rent videos, they are usually foreign, as Mr. S. is the one who rents them! But I'll watch this thread to see if I get some ideas!

I almost never watch movies, and have not watched television in over twenty years. I do have a recommendation, though - Chicken Run. I loved it! Sandy

Excalibur

Ladyhawke (my alltime favorite which still makes me cry at the end)

Man Without a Face, Mutiny on the Bounty, Hamlet(all with Mel Gibson)

Anybody like old Alred Hitchcock movies??? Or am I just the only weird one??? sharon, I think we have the same taste in comedy as I enjoyed all the ones you mentioned. Also liked the same sagas, favorite all time western type was Jeremiah Johnson by a long shot. Still love that movie. There are not too many of the musicals that I don't enjoy seeing over again, and I really enjoy well done Sci Fi...lots of second rate stuff out there though and I have very little patience sorting through.

could someone please teach this old woman how to spell and type at the same time???

-- Anonymous, May 21, 2001

Diane, don't feel bad, I can't spell and type, and think, at the same time!!!

Movies, oh yeh! "The Matrix" is great, really makes you think about what we believe to be "reality".

"The Green Mile", with Tom Hanks has got to be the best drama in a long time, also makes you think about what we consider to be what is "best" for society.

Best chick film, "Girl Interrupted".

And, finally, to give away my age again, the best all time sleeper musical, "The Rocky Horror Picture Show" seen weekly, in costume, the entire summer of 1977. Susan Sarandon, I love ya!!!

The Secret of Roan Inish. http://www.amazon.com/exec/obidos/ASIN/6303820905/107-2527721-2474921

"The Lottery" is really creepy. Billy Jack, The Warriors.

Dead Poets Society, Good Will Hunting, aw heck... anything with Robin Williams.

"You'd better not/hurt her/Frank furter!"

Ho ho, now we know YOUR secret too Annie!! I find myself singing "There's a Light (Over at the Frankenstein Place)" at the oddest times...but I've also woken up with 'The Monster Mash' running through my mind.(Or 'Mean Green Mother From Outer Space'...)

Another (former) sleeper that I love is "A Christmas Story" based on Gene Shepherd's writing. It was perhaps Darren McGavin's finest hour (unless you too are a Carl Kolchak fan!)

Other titles in no particular order of significance...Weekend at Bernies, Men In Black, The Fugitive, The Scarlet Pimpernel (either of the first two pictures), Overboard, Labyrinth, Escape from New York, Legend,Casablanca, Toy Story, A Bug's Life, Butch Cassidy and the Sundance Kid, Road Warrior, The Addam's Family, The Three Musketeers (the Michael York version...Charleton Heston, Richard Chamberlin, Raquel Welch, etc.), Time Bandits, Monty Python and The Holy Grail, Jurassic Park (gotta love those dinosaurs!!), The Good/The Bad/& The Ugly, Schindler's List, Thunderheart, Fargo, Hiding Out, A Night to Remember, Nightmare Before Christmas, Tampopo (in Japanese, with subtitles), and My Neighbor Totoro. Anything with The Marx Brothers.

Gee, you'd hardly know that that was ME making that list would you? Okay, add on -- Army of Darkness, John Carpenter's 'The Thing' and 'The Fog' and 'They Live', Phantasm, Attack of the Killer Tomatoes (the original and the third one. I'd love to see The Killer Tomatoes Eat Paris...), Tim Burton's ' Legend of Sleepy Hollow', Tremors, Psycho (see? I've got class! I like Hitchcock, just so long as it isn't 'The Birds'. Dumb, dumb, dumb.), The 13th Warrior,...oh well, enough of those, I'm probably making Sharon nervous!

Some of my favorites:

All time Favorite....The Beverly Hillibilies!...the new one, I have it on tape, we watch it every time we need a good laugh. It's so funny. Granny looks exactly like my mom did.

For Richer or Poorer......where the NY City yuppies go hide out with the Amish. Love that movie.

The Parent Trap.....the new one, seen it now about 50 times on satalite. I could watch it over and over.

10 Things I Hate About You........Just a cute movie about teenagers going thru life, funny funny. Makes me laugh every time.

Babe...of course, and the new 101 Dalmations where there are real animals.

Sylvester...an excellent movie about a wild Texas horse turned Grand Prix. Melissa Gilbert.

I have all the old horse movies on tape, like Smoky, Thunderhead, Flicka, Horse in the Grey Flannel Suit, Gypsie Colt.

I love Working Girl, Dirty Dancing, Erin Brockavitch. Crocadile Dundee (love Paul Hogan), anything with Sam Elliot in it(he's a hunk),

And of course the intence high technology movies like Armagendon, Enemy of the State, Jurassic Park, Daylight, all those excellent digital surround sound movies. I have a home theater that I've had for 15 years, I can make the walls rumble and shake! Actually, my genius brother made and sold home theaters to Circuit City long before anyone knew what they were, made out of High End car stereo components. I'll have to think of some more.

Well,lots of good possibilities here.

Julie-you frequently make me nervous. No offense. I can hear you singing like Audrey Two,in the shower ;o) Have you listened in to me belting out those bluegrass tunes? Now THAT'S scary.Looks like I need to ring you up for a recommendation when I just can't decide what to watch!

JOJ,who is helping me learn Spanish, apparently recommends Like Water for Chocolate.

Debra-I cry over Ladyhawke too.But I cry over almost anything,so no litmus test there.Yes to Excaliber(pretty racey at times!),yes to Mel Gibson- Mad Max at Thunderdome esp.

diane-I like Hitchock as well,esp.THE BIRDS,JULIE! :oP

Jay,yes, have watched many of Duke's contributions.Nick is a big Wayne Fan. I liked Rooster, too and The Cowboys.

Keep 'em coming.I'll have quite a list to rent this winter. Thanks.

The Abyss...excellent movie, and Always....with Richard Dryfess and Holly Hunter...love that one too.

-- Anonymous, May 22, 2001

Sharon, have you seen "The Sixth Sense", yet?

This is another movie that I highly recommend - very well done, IMO. I'm surprised no one else has mentioned it, yet.

-- Anonymous, May 22, 2001

No Jim,I've not seen it.Guess I need to call you up for movie recommendations, too, huh?

Oh,yeah, from the other thread-I forgot to tell you-I don't watch Voyager. We only get PBS. I had seen a few episodes before and it was ok,but not like The Next Generation.Nick likes the movies the best, butI really liked TNG.

I still insist on being called Captain and I call Nick Number One.He,naturally, thinks it's the other way around. What else is new.

-- Anonymous, May 22, 2001

The Sixth Sense was GOOD. It blew me away at the end! But lots of parts were pretty scary. We have Dish Network, and we never rent any movies, so when they come out on our channels, they are all new to us. Sometimes they give us a free preview weekend or week, and then they show all the new movies. What's the movie with the big tidal wave that was soooo good, the meteor was comming and hit the ocean, and the kids made it to the mountain on the motorcycle.

-- Anonymous, May 22, 2001

Shhhh... don't say anything more, Cindy. We don't want to spoil it for Sharon & Nick. (grin)

I think that was "Deep Impact".

-- Anonymous, May 22, 2001

Oh, and by the way, Cindy, I agree with your assesment on "The Sixth Sense". I never saw the ending coming in a million years! Great movie.

-- Anonymous, May 22, 2001

I still insist on being called Captain and I call Nick Number One.He,naturally, thinks it's the other way around. What else is new.

Sharon: If either of you want to be considered as the captain then one of you will have to shave your head for the job. (grin)

Oh, and you can call me Data*...

*seeing as Nick believes that I think too much.

-- Anonymous, May 22, 2001

Oh,Jim ,there you go sweet talkin' me again! Data (and Spock) is my hero! Now that's my kind of man..er android..er whatever.

-- Anonymous, May 22, 2001

I'm with Sheepish---The Last Temptation of Christ was good and as usual the book was better.

I'm not good with names but basically all the Star Trek movies and I like the Voyager series. I remember when 7 of 9 came on the scene, one of the guys at work sez "Did you see the boobs on the borg babe?" I still laugh at that.

Another fave is The Day The World Stood Still, a sci fi from the fifties. I'd like to see a modern remake of it if they 'd stick to the original story line.

-- Anonymous, May 23, 2001

Was "The Day the Earth Stood Still" that Michael Rennie movie with Klatu (Klatu Barratu Nictu) (or whatever?) That scared the beejesus out of me as a kid!

John, I am so glad someone else has seen "The Last Temptation of Christ." I have the Kazanzakis (sp?) book but have not had the time to savor it. I think I will try again this summer since you said it was better (and I like your opinions!)

I liked Sixth Sense too! Hello????? And another movie I forgot but saw recently and loved was "The Kid" with Bruce Willis. Made me cry a few times...

This is fun!

-- Anonymous, May 23, 2001

Julie, I sing "There's a Light (Over at the Frankenstein place") a lot, too! To this day, I can't say "anticipation" without a huge pregnant pause in the middle of it! Tim Curry was the best (but my brother does a great impersonation!)

-- Anonymous, May 23, 2001

It seems as if I never see movies any more. Oh well!

Also in no particular order: OVerboard, Hiding Out, Mrs. Doubtfire, Star Wars/Empire Strikes Back/Return of the Jedi, Jeremiah Johnson, Butch Cassidy & the Sundance Kid, several versions (including BBC/made for TV) of Pride & Prejudice, A Christmas Story, all the Indiana Jones movies (but Raiders was best), Witness, Lethal Weapon 1 & 2, Alien & Aliens, Stand By Me, Big, American Graffiti, Jurassic Park*, Terminator & Terminator 2, Jennifer 8, The Goonies, Animal House, Sabrina (orig. with Audrey Hepburn & Humphrey Bogart), 9 to 5, The Fugitive, The African Queen, Ghostbusters, Out of Africa, Back to the Future, The Commitments, Local Hero, The Big Chill, Ladyhawke, Last of the Mohicans (Daniel Day-Lewis version), The Full Monty, Places in the Heart, The Gods Must be Crazy, Crocodile Dundee I & II, North by Northwest, How the West was Won, Escape from New York, Romancing the Stone, L.A. Confidential, Fantasia, Braveheart, okay that's enough.

I'm sure I've forgotten some, but I am about to crash . . . .

-- Anonymous, May 23, 2001

Dante's Peak....I was trying to remember that one yesterday, love that movie. And I still have the copy I made of Mount St. Helens years ago. Did any of you see The Abyss?

-- Anonymous, May 23, 2001

One of my all time favorites is actually two movies: Jean de Florette and the sequel Manon of the Spring. French homesteading story with rabbits & squashes & love & drought & surprises. A little too slow- moving for some people. Also The Gods Must Be Crazy and Milagro Beanfield War.

-- Anonymous, May 23, 2001

Oh yeah, Sam remimded me, The Gods Must be Crazy was GREAT, I loved it.

-- Anonymous, May 23, 2001

Sharon,

I've always liked Spock and Data, too. I've always wanted to be logical like they were...

BTW - Here's another recommendation: "American History X"

Also, you might have missed it on the other thread but I recommended "October Sky", too. Excellent movie!

Cindy: I did see "The Abyss" and loved it!

I loved "The Day the Earth Stood Still", too. Would love to see a remake.

Speaking of remakes... I looking forward to the remake of "Planet of the Apes". I've heard that it won't be *exactly* like the original so I guess it won't really be a remake but I'm looking forward to seeing it none-the-less.

Some others that I'm looking forward to seeing when they come out:

"Pearl Harbor"

"A.I."

"Evolution"

"Tomb Raider"

"Final Fantasy: The Spirit Within"

"Harry Potter and the Sorcerer's Stone"

"Lord of the Rings: The Fellowship of the Ring"

Coming in 2002

"Star Wars Episode II"

"Terminator 3: Rise of the Machines"

"Austin Powers 3"

"The Matrix Reloaded"

"Star Trek X: Nemesis"

"X-Men 2"

Coming in 2003

"Rendezvous with Rama"

"Wallace & Gromit: The Movie"

Here's the URL where I go to find new releases on DVD/VHS and upcoming releases in the movie theaters:

My all time favorite is probably The Princess Bride (a midieval spoof). Another fave along the same genre-spoof lines is the much more recent Galaxy Quest. What a hoot!

I recently enjoyed The Mummy Returns, which is kinda Indiana Jones- ish. Also, the original Jurassic Park was cool. The sequel pretty much stank, though, IMHO. Too dang dark.

Sixth sense was pretty cool AFTER the movie. We don't watch TV or see many movies, so are out of practice at tuning out the production manipulation that made that movie WAY TOO INTENSE for us while we were actually watching it. We nearly walked out several times. I'm glad we didn't, though.

-- Anonymous, May 23, 2001

Oh, yeah, and What Women Want. Very great movie!!! Totally hilarious, and surprisingly accurate!

-- Anonymous, May 23, 2001

Laura, regarding The Lost World (Jurassic Park sequel), I didn't like it much either (except for Jeff Goldblum). Two-thirds of the characters in that movie (at least) DESERVED to die on account of the STUPID things they did! I was especially annoyed with Julianne Moore's character, who was supposed to be an expert on predators, and the big game hunter. They're worried about the meat eater dinos finding them, and she's running around with a BLOOD-saturated jacket! What morons! Perhaps they "theorized" that the dinos didn't use smell in hunting -- would YOU trust your life to an unproven theory like that? Not me, honey!

BTW, there is a Jurassic Park III coming out in July. Steven Spielberg is producer but not director, and but Sam Neill is in it as Alan Grant, again. It's supposed to be back on the original island, and to take place after Jurassic Park original but before The Lost World -- at least according to Sam Neill in an interview.

Yep, I forgot about that. I remember watching the first half hour and thinking to myself: "what is this crap?"

But after the movie I was thinking: "this is one of the greatest movies I've ever seen!"

I've only seen the movie once but I'd love to rent it again.

-- Anonymous, May 23, 2001

My husband had a problem with Bruce Willis' shirt! (Sixth Sense) 'nuff said.

Wallis (sp?) and Grommet again sounds perfect! I also liked Chicken Run.

Another movie that I really liked and thought I would not was Perfect Storm.

-- Anonymous, May 24, 2001

Oh dear. 'The Sixth Sense'. I was really disappointed. When they got to the big "surprise" ending, I was left sitting there saying "That IT? That's ALL?!!" man, I had that figured out in the first ten minutes of the movie. Maybe I watch too MANY movies....

For instance, 'The English Patient' which was widely bally-hooed. Boy, I had that one figured out before they finished the opening credits, and you coulda hit the high points of content in 25 minutes, not 2 hours and 25 minutes. Boy did that one drag.(but then, my idea of a good time is a Jackie Chan movie...)

I've gotta agree with Joy about Jurassic Park. Julianna Moore the (cough cough) scientist, who shrieks about them getting too close to the dinosaurs goes and pets a baby herself. The blood stained jacket was just TOO inutterably STUPID, they deserved to be Dino Dinner. The only people I felt bad about getting munched was one of the biologists (the guy with the hat) and...hm, I forget his name? Fred? The one who tried to use the little jeep to pull the bus back up onto the cliff. He really didn't deserve to be munched, esp. if you follow the Hitchcockian formula for who dies and who doesn't in a horror film.

I've also got to admit that there were parts of The Gods Must Be Crazy II that I liked better than the original, and vice versa. I also forgot to mention 'American Dreamer' ....it has a very awkward portion where the impetus falters, but just the same, it was a very fun movie.

I'm looking forward (but not without trepidation) to Lord of the Rings too...and I'm really hopeful for a new Terminator movie (it'll be interesting how close they follow the graphic novel) andd another X-Men movie, altho I doubt they'll take that where I want to see it go.Dee & I have been talking about the new Mummy Returns movie. I'll admit I liked the first one, altho it wasn't a world beater, it was enjoyable in a sort of retro way.
