1. Yes. Caesar dressing is rampant here. Bleah. 2. No. Apple Cinnamon Cheerios are also rampant. Bleah again. 3. Yes. Tab is by far the sweetest thing I have ever ingested. It is highly disgusting, and I can't believe it is still marketed. But guess what? Also rampant here. Okay, I'm not shopping at Super K anymore. I hope Food Lion is cheap (somebody, anybody know?). I've been here since October and still have yet to set foot in a Food Lion, in spite of the fact that there's one on every block and it's the most popular grocery store around here.

The Super Walmart here is straight up ghetto, though. Besides, why would I want to drive my ass all the way to Walmart when there are two (that I know of -- it's probably more like fifteen) Food Lions around, all about five minutes from my house?

i dont think i have EVER heard of any of the stores you guys have mentioned with exception to wal-mart and k-mart. i live in seattle and the nearest wal-mart is about 30 minutes away...and i have never actually been there, or to any other wal-mart. is it like a fred meyer store? and as for all the super-k and that shit, all we have here is a trashed out k-mart that is in the seedy part of town. for food shopping we have safeway (the cheap store), thriftway (the expensive yuppie store), and QFC (the one i love the most...less expensive than thriftway, but better than safeway. and, of course, we have all the healthfood stores like whole foods and pcc. it wouldn't be seattle without a million of those.

and we do have caesar dressing, tab and apple cinnamon cheerios.

We don't have any Super K's around here. We don't even have any regular Kmarts.. The nearest Walmart is a 30 minute drive away, and they don't sell fresh foods, just pre-packaged stuff, so you can't really go *food* shopping there unless you never drink milk or eat fresh vegetables. For grocery stores, we have Shaw's, Shop N Save, and IGA. IGA is too expensive for the crap they sell, and Shaw's and Shop N Save are like the same store with different names. And they all sell Caesar dressing, Apple Cinnamon Cheerios, and ew, Tab.

And I've totally spent 50 dollars a pop on a food shopping trip. Your mom must be the thriftiest person alive. On big shopping trips, my dad can spend over 100 dollars, and he's just buying for 2 people. I mean, food's expensive.

We had IGAs all over the place in Illinois. Ghe-tto fabulous. Not to mention small selection and exorbitant prices. Ick.

They don't have any of the stores here that they did in the Midwest. Here it's like:

Super Walmart, Super K
Food Lion
Farm Fresh
Kroger
Harris Teeter

Back in St. Louis it was:

Schnuck's (which I believe is owned by the same company as Food Lion, because they have the same commercials)
Shop n Save
IGA
National (which went out of business or something)
Aldi's (the equivalent of shopping out of a dumpster)

I haven't heard of half of the stores you guys are talking about! I remember when I finally realized they had different grocery stores everywhere you went and that there aren't national grocery chains (in general). Up here in northern Michigan we have: Super KMart, Wal-Mart, Carter's, Kroger, Meijer's, Glen's, IGA's, Save-A-Lot, and a few others....

We have Super Wal-Mart (my personal favorite. Pretty much the only place I shop. I've been known to go there five times a week), Harris Teeter (yuppie store), Kroger, and Publix. The latter two are pretty much taking over the chain grocery market here in Georgia. There used to be some other stores around (A&P, Winn-Dixie, Food Lion, Bi-Lo), but they've pretty much all closed. Kroger and Publix have this knack of moving in directly across the street from smaller grcoery stores.

I haven't seen Tab in ages, but I see Apple Cinnamon Cheerios and caesar dressing often. Also, I didn't figure out that caesar dressing had anchovies in it until I had been a vegetarian for quite some time. Bleh.

5. There is now a cheaper, generic version of Easy Cheese out. I didn't buy it though; you know the stuff probably tastes like ass. Easy Cheese totally rocks, but it's expensive as hell. $3.50 for a can of spray cheese? Come on.

I remember tab from some time in the 80s (so yes we have had it down under). It came in a small red can if I remember rightly, although I don't think I ever tasted it, I just saw some of the bigger kids drinking it. I actually read a newspaper article the other day about how they were going to stop producing it, but someone stepped in to save it only a few weeks ago. I wish I'd payed more attention now.

Caesar salad dressing and Tab can both be found at Super Stop & Shop...this store having the most comprehensive soda aisle I've ever seen. You can find all sorts of obscure soft drinks there.

On a side note...is EVERYBODY'S local Wal-Mart a ghetto store? I thought it was just us, until I heard other people mentioning it.

The last time they were doing the national census, there were representatives standing outside the Wal-Mart, speaking Polish and Spanish, the languages of the two main groups of people who shop there in our area (I belong to the first group.)

I wonder how they made the correlation between people shirking the census, and people who shop at Wal-Mart...:-)

We have two Wal-Marts in the cities of Hampton and Newport News... One is way more ghetto than the other. Katie, if you think the Wal- Mart in NN is ghetto, I invite you to take in the sights and smells of the Hampton Wal-Mart. That one is horrid...

Other than that, until Giant Eagle expands from Pittsburgh, it's Target, Food Lion, Farm Fresh, Kroger's, or Harris Tweety-Bird.

I didn't even know there was a (Super) Walmart in Hampton until today. We had lunch at Olive Garden, and after that I needed to go to Walmart to buy something that is apparently only sold there (Caress Waterfresh Breeze soap -- BAR soap). Anyway, my dumb ass was all set to leave Olive Garden and drive way the fuck down the interstate to the Newport News one. But when I went to pull out of the parking lot, I looked to the right and saw the big old Super Walmart sign.

Thank god, because I would have felt really damn stupid.

Anyway, I didn't think it was more or less ghetto than the NN one... just about the same, I think.

Which brings up an interesting question. In general, what's cheaper, Walmart or Kmart? I'm thinking Walmart.

Okay, here we go, northeastern NY:

Price Chopper, the chain we shop at. Me mum and I love the store's brand of iced tea. ::looks over at his half-empty glass of aforementioned liquid::

Hannaford, changed their name from Shop 'n Save because they thought it sounded classier. (The owner's names are Hannaford -- they're brothers, I think -- which explains where the name came from.) Question: Is Shop 'n Save a national chain or a bunch of local chains that just happen to have the same name?

We used to have Grand Union, but they went bankrupt and Price Chopper bought most of the stores. Hannaford bought a few, don't know what happened to the rest.

Does anyone else have BJ's Wholesale Club? We only shop there once a year (when we're getting ready for our annual trip to Vermont), but buying in bulk is so much fun. =)

Sam's Club, Wal-Mart's version of BJ's. Come to think of it, I think we go to Sam's instead of BJ's for the rare occasion we buy bulk. And I just realized that I don't even know if Sam's is around anymore. Probably is.

Obviously the two 'Marts, Wal and K. =) The one Wal-Mart I'm familiar with is just a regular one (sells food but not perishables), though there's at least one Super around. The one K-Mart I know of is a Super. Haven't been in there in years. Hell, last time I was in there it wasn't even a Super yet. I think all the K-Marts around here are Supers, but don't hold me to that.

Then there's Stewart's, which isn't a grocery store chain but more like a convenience store/ice cream parlor chain. That's right, ice cream. They have their own brand of the stuff with rather interesting names/flavors, such as Kaydeross Kreme (my sister's favorite, it's an orange-vanilla sherbet named after a local creek), Fireworks (vanilla ice cream with cherry swirls and Pop Rocks- type candy), and Hudson River Mudd, which is the PCB-themed ice cream mentioned in the article I linked to. (The article was written before the flavor and name were finalized; if I recall correctly, now it's a chocolate ice cream with peanut butter and butterscotch swirls.) You can even buy half-gallon cartons of the most popular flavors.

Damn, that Stewart's thing was a tangent and a half. But really, if you ever find yourself in upstate New York or Vermont (not sure if they have them in western Massachusetts), stop in Stewart's and try some of their ice cream. You can't miss them, they're literally everywhere.

I almost forgot: The one year I was away at college I went to the Super Wal-Mart on the other side of town. I was surprised to find a McDonald's inside the store. It wasn't a skimpy little thing, either; it had the full McD's menu and a number of tables. I remember sitting at a table drinking a Coke, staring at shoppers and the dairy case and thinking, "This is all very weird."

And while we're on the subject of discount department stores (we were? when?), does anyone else have an Ames in their area?

Ames... fuckin' A. There used to be one in Smithfield, the little country town I used to live in, and I think Hampton bore one too. Financial troubles a few years back led them to pull out of this area and I had assumed they closed. Peebles took over the one in Smithfield, the Hampton lot, if Ames is what I'm thinking about, has stood dormant for damn near a decade.

Tim, Shop N Save is a New England chain. And Hannaford is a big company that makes generic brand foods that are sold in Shop N Saves. I guess they're calling stores Hannaford now, too [did you ever see one of those annoying ads with the stupid Hannaford song? "We never stop.. DEL-ighting youuuu"]. And we have Ames all over the place, here.

This is quite odd, talking to Katie like three times over the past few days (roomates with a friend of mine) and realizing the cult following that's arisen....
So all these landmarks MAKE PERFECT F'N SENSE!!!. Considering I live about 10 minutes from Katie and the Kelly Girl (Doug), I've had many late night excursions to Wal-Mart, Super K and the Poquoson 7-11.
Screw shopping, I like going to Wal-Mart (especially when I lived in Norfolk), and getting on those "rascals" drive around running into things at 2 a.m. Its really funn when your piss drunk and your roomates are chasing each other around the store going just a hair under 2 miles per hour.

What's this have to do with anything? Nothing, I'm bored again.
My aunt drank Tab, may it rot in hell (the Tab, not my aunt).
Apple Cinnamon cheerios was cool for like five minutes.....I seriously disagree with this one. ACC's SUCK!

Wow, doesn't anyone have A&P, Acme, Stop & Shop (Edward's) or Shoprite near them? We have K-marts over here, but they don't have groceries, they just sell clothes and stuff like that. Totally ghetto too. I think that K-Mart has this requirement of making their store - ghettofabulous- or putting them in high crime areas. (At least where I'm from anyway!) All of the Walmarts in my state are about 50 mins. away, so I've never actually gone to one.. I wonder if it's any different than K-Mart. I guess New Jersey is underpriviledged because we don't have any Target's that sell groceries, just snacks. Actually, come to think of it.. I don't know of any clothing/grocery type store over here.. It's kind of weird to combine the two! Anyway.. I think they stopped making Apple Cinnamon Cheerios.. I'm pretty sure of it anyway because I haven't seen anything but regular and Honey Nut for a long ass time.. We have RC cola, TAB and Shasta.. the only one that is good is RC cola, TAB = eww, SHASTA be NASTY.. We have ceasar dressing over here in mass quantities.. but I swear someone has a conspiracy against french dressing!! arrrgh! :-(

Julie! Wow, I didn't know A&P, Stop & Shop/Edward's and Shop-Rite still existed! We used to have them up in the Albany area but they haven't been around in, like, 10 years! (Actually, there might still be an A&P somewhere, but I doubt it.) I think I still remember the Shop-Rite logo: yellow outer circle with "Shop-Rite" inside, and a red inner circle with a shopping cart in it, right? Or is that the Stop & Shop logo? It's been forever...

RC Cola's pretty good. One of my friends loves the stuff, and he just happens to live near one of the only stores around here that sells it. Our favorite pizza place also sells it with their pizza. I don't think the local Target sells groceries, but that's because it's in our Colossal Huge-Ass Mall(tm). I've also never been in Target, but it only came here a few months ago and I don't go down to the mall often.

It's funny that you mentioned that your favorite pizza shop is practically the only one that sells RC cola.. because the only place I know where to get RC cola is my favorite pizza shop! Crazy! Anyway, the shoprite logo is exactly how you described it. We've had our shoprite forever it seems! We only have one now, the other one we had went bankrupt. A&P is new to us and I haven't seen that many in New Jersey.. so your guess is as good as mine :-)
