Can Apex AD-703a DVD player read CD-R/CD-RW?

greenspun.com : LUSENET : Video CD : One Thread

I bought an Apex AD-703a DVD player that claims to read VCD, CD formats but it did not read any of my VCDs, MP3 discs (both CD-R and CD-RW, I used TMPGEnc to encode and Nero 5 to burn). It read the commercial VCDs, original Audio CDs, though. I could not find any info on the Web about this model. Can anyone help? Thanks.

I bought a Apex AD-703a DVD also and I've been unable to play any SVCD, VCD disks on it. I tried numerous disks made with TMPGEnc 12a & 12f using Nero 5.5. I also burned several test images I downloaded off the net. I tried using both CD-R & CD-RW disks. Disks which play fine on my PC using WinDVD will not play on the Apex 703a (I did discover my DVD player on my PC doesn't like black disks.) I wasn't able to play my MP3 disks which play fine on my portable MP3 player. The only MP3 disk I could get to play was a disk from MP3.COM. It's pretty discouraging given Apex reputation with SVCD & MP3 disks. I've had about enough of it, I think I'll throw in the towel and return it. You might try making a copies of one the commercial VCD disk using different CD-R & CD-RW media. Good luck.

Are you talking about 703A, Neroboy? I know AD-703 is OK, but many people having the same problem with the new AD-703A (www.eb-sky.com) which was manufactured by a different Chinese company than that of AD- 703. Even the salesperson at Sam's Wholesale (where I bought it) said that there were many people returned the player claiming to have the same problem.

Hi Phil, Sounds to me like your AD-703A does not handle recordable media. If it plays commercial VCDs but not homemade ones, that's a sure sign that it doesn't support CD-R media. The CD-RW problem surprised me though. That usually works. I have the Apex AD-703 and it will play just about anything except miniDVD. I know that the compatibility list at www.vcdhelp.com says the AD-703 plays miniDVD, but this is not correct. The list maintainer told me that he received e-mail saying both that the AD-703 did and did not support miniDVD and he didn't know which was right, so he was saying that it did. No one who actually owns one that I've talked has ever claimed it played miniDVD. You might be interested in buying a non-Apex model if you want CD-R/CD-RW compatibility. I have a friend who owns a Sampo and his has no problem with CD-R/CD-RW media. I've heard similar things about the Afreey LD-2060, which does support miniDVD.

Yup! That's what I did. Actually, Apex Tech Support did respond to me clearly that AD-703A (sold at Wal-Mart and Sam's Wholesale Club) does not read CD-R or CD-RW. So, I returned it and bought AD-703 at Circuit City and it worked like a charm!!! I love it, so far. Thanks and have a nice day, too.
