Which thread Polly?....Kirk

Wow, I am sure glad I didn't share our experience with earth forms over there. That probably would have REALLY set him off. And JOJ we also would like to hear about your foundation strength, we are in very heavy clay here and the whole thing changes so much depending on weather conditions (wet or dry). We want to lay up two stories of field stone. What would you suggest??? thanks....

Whoa-I thought JOJ had gotten arrested,or beaten up by the army for god, or something and you were setting up a fund for his bail or medical bills or something. Well,I WOULD have kicked in some bucks!

Nah, joel..er...jc...er... whoever is just making his point and trying to stir those waters. Basically "quitcherbitchen and talk homesteading".I think he's just trying hard to sound like a crabby a**,for effect. I could be wrong.

10 to one he doesn't live in KY.'course we do have more than our fair share of bush vets, sour grapers and assorted other escapees(hope I didn't hurt anyone's feelings there!). Add in our own natural born feuders and well, maybe he is from here,at that!Hey,maybe it was Nick!

Nah,Nick is having fun over on another forum, now.I know what name he's using and that JC would definitely NOT be it.

Didn't bother me.

Seriously, I would also like to know what you are talking about, Joe, in reference to stronger foundations.

Well, fokes, I typed out this rather long letter last night, telling you more than you probably ever wanted to know about physics, tensile strength, compressive strength, and so forth.

Then something went very wrong. I think it was the greenspun site, though i'm not sure.

I left the computer on for several hours, while doing some solar water heater plumbing, and the site STILL wouldn't work. :( grr.

I HATE typing long posts, and then having them get lost in cyberspace.

So here's a condensed version (the other one was too darn long anyway.

The uniform building code requires on piece of half inch rebar centered in the footing, for single story buildings. Two pieces for two story.

I ALWAYS use two bars in the footings, even for single story. Put them about three inches off the ground, and spaced one third and two thirds of the width of the footing.

But here's the "magic" touch. Put another bar of steel about three inches down from the top of the stemwall. Centered.

This enables the foundation to act as a huge girder, and gives you about ten times as much strength, should the footing try to settle.

Cost of 1/2" rebar, when I built the rental that was affected by the landslide, was only $2.00 per twenty foot stick. It's up to about $3.50 now, but that's still only 35 cents per lineal foot, and is the single smartest thing you can do to get your home off to a good start.

JOJ

By the way, how about the Jumpoff Joe Foundation for worn out contrractors? Send cash only, preferably nothing smaller than a C note :)

Thanks JOJ - nice to see you posting, btw!

DAMN IT JOE!! DID I ASK ABOUT THE COST OF REBAR? Stick to the foundation question and don't get off topic. HA HA. ....Thanks Kirk

Cindy-half the people from E.KY are mean buggers, the other half are virtual saints. All in the same family, too. I guess it balances out. 10 years and I'm still here,so it must.(P.S. I'm the saint half in MY family-heeheehee)

My friend said the family I live next to is known to have a kleptomaniac gene running thru it,as well. That's a new one on me.Maybe Monsanto can genetically modify them.I should call and ask.

JOJ- if I ever have $100 all at one time I'll consider a donation.Don't hold your breath.(And thanks for your helpful suggestions)

Kirk-behave yourself, now.Jim's back and he won't let you get away with that. And I thought you were a real rock. Boy,anyone who doesn't like thread drift would definitely have major problems over here.

-- Anonymous, May 12, 2001

thread drift??? are we drifting??? no wonder I am dizzy all the time, thought I was having flashbacks...oh well...yeah Kirk behave or Jim will have to make you sit in the corner!!! Thanks JOJ
