The Great Root Canal Sagagreenspun.com : LUSENET : Poole's Roost II : One Thread |
I continued to have pain after losing a wisdom tooth and molar, so my dentist suggested that I have the root canal done to the next molar in line ASAP. It did indeed help with the sharp pains, though my gum remains very sore. The root canal guy (dentists are are *very* specialized here; just as the first did nothing but facial surgery, this guy does nothing but RC's!), was superb. I felt very little pain or even discomfort; he had the thing finished before I even knew it.
Skill like that deserves a mention: Dr. Lewis in Hoover. If (heaven forbid) you should ever need a root canal, he's worth the trip, believe me. Fly down here and have it done. :)

You made me remember my wisdom teeth adventure. I was in and out of the guy's office in 15 minutes. The sedative didn't fuly take effect until I was back in the car. Three days of pain, and then I could eat. I'm glad the root canal fixed you up; sore teeth are an incredible distraction.

I'll say this, and it's meant to help EVERYBODY who ever will have wisdom tooth surgery, or the like:I had all 4 wisdom teeth extracted in November 1980. Plenty of laughing gas and Demerol and all that; sufficed for the time in the dental office. Had the then-girlfriend for a driver.
But the MISTAKE we made was lolly-gagging around to get to the drug store with the pain-killer prescription. Didn't realize that the dental office medications would wear off so soon; nor that there would be such a long line at the drug store.
What resulted was that by the time the drug-store meds kicked in, the dental office meds had worn off, and I experienced the worst pain of my life. (Worse than hitting a phone pole on a motorcycle at 85 MPH, for that matter -- have done that too) Damn near unbearable. Thought my head would explode.
SO -- if you have any serious dental surgery, MAKE SURE your dental office calls your pharmacy of choice while you're still at the dental office, and the pharmacy has your pain-killers ready before you even get there!
Sheesh.
