Perhaps it was for his young wife, but more likely it was for Elmira Shelton, a young woman he loved as a young man. The date of the poem coincides with her coming back into his life, just before his death.

Her name was Virginia. She was his second cousin (So there was no incest involved)As in the Raven Poe renamed his beloved. 5 years before her death she had a vein burst which left her an invalid until she died of tuberculosis. This was when Poe picked up his drinking an usage of Morphine, and opium again. I have also read that she bore a child but it didn't live very long, but havn't found anyhting else to suppoort it.

Opium and morphine...really, thats interesting. I'm wondering if this effected his writing at all. Did he continue to write the same, did it get better, worse, change in some way? Just wondering, and yes, supposedly Virginia was his second cousin and that's what the raven is also based on. It was after she died which also drasticly changed his writing. He married twice, but both died young.
