Actually, it was "official" years ago. Joe Burns documented the fact that X3 companies were advancing web technology because they were about the only industry online that was making money....and reinvesting in newer, better, faster ways to get their "product" out.

Ironic, isn't it? The industry that is hated [publicly] the most is the one that is doing the most to advance the web for the rest of us. 1.4 BILLION in 99. I bet that is a conservative estimate, too.

Personallly, I was bummed when the new .extensions were approved, and ".xxx" was not allowed. All porn could be placed on those sites. I believe people should be able to do want they want as adults, and it would be very simple to install browser patches to disallow .xxx sites, for those that don't want access [accidental or otherwise].

If the .gov gave the sex industry its own top level then it would be easy to filter and the problem would go away. Got to have a problem before they can offer a solution ie regulating the internet. The big problem is not enough people are complaining about the way it is now so they haven't gotten enough people behind the regulation bandwagon to push it forward. The sex industry has been instrumental in pushing forward advances in other areas as well. Most people can honestly say that VCRs for instance wouldn't be as widely adopted yet if it wasn't for porn.
