I have a sony Vaio w/ DVD player. I recently got some DVCDs from friends, but I can't play them. Can I download some kind of software that will allow me the play the DVCDs or I need a CD-ROM.

You don't need a CD-ROM, but you may need special software. Some programs, like PowerDVD which I have, can directly play video files of various formats. If you have the right codecs installed (they come with whatever your software DVD player is), Windows Media Player may be able to play it. Try loading the file directly off the DVCD into Windows Media Player. You'll have to poke around the disc to see what subdirectory the video lives in, but try loading that directly. I'm not sure what DVCD is exactly. It's either a supposed successor to SVCD or it's a term used deceptively in South East Asia to refer to pirate VCDs that are made of DVDs. I've seen references to both use the term.

Gezzz... DVCD is old hat. This question has been posted many times, years ago on this board. Go to see old questions under "Video formats (273)"

You will get the full story of DVCD under a very old thread here "Making your own VCDs (908)" > "Making DVCD (Double VCD)", a question raised by -- Mr VCD (mrvcd@juno.com), June 17, 1999.

Basically DVCD is supposedly a double capacity VCD, ie one movie is squeezed into one single disc, usually up to 90 minutes long. Most VCD players will play it unless your player is not too forgiving. Anyway you will get more info from the old thread on this board.
