I need help with a small enginegreenspun.com : LUSENET : Freedom! self reliance : One Thread |
I need help with a small engine. I have a 6 H.P craftsman motor on a chipper shredder. I need to get the chipper blades off of the bottom end of the crank shaft and I Don't know how There is a bolt through the bottom end of the blades that goes into the end of the crank shaft. I have taken it off. Now the question is...Are the blades screwed onto the crank shaft? Are they lined up with a key way?I can not see the shaft to tell. I have cussed at if for two hours and I have used all of the cuss words I know...Help

Hi ,It should be keyed on the shaft. Some times it gets rusted on. Try tapping the shaft with a hammer and pulling on the blades,if that doesn't work try a small gearpuller,I use one meant to pull steering wheels, costs about three dollars,at a parts store. Once in a while I've had to heat it up with a propane torch. One of these methods should work. Good luck,Daryll

Good advice from Darryl. The only thing I might add is to soak it with liquid wrench or wd40 type stuff. The gear puller would probably do it by itself, but a bit of lube there might be just the ticket.

I got it off with a puller. I just did not want to pry to hard until I knew if it was held on with a key or if it screwed on. Dad always used to call WD-40 or anything like that Chreacher Piss I don't know why but that has kind of stuck here around our house Thanks

Glad that worked for you, Grant. I have a dislike for lawn equipment. It's contrary stuff. Seems I spend more time working on it than using it!

Question:I have a connecting rod that has bent because of 1 bolt that broke off and the other side loosened causing the bottom half of the to hang up and bend the top half. It won't come out the bottom or will not go up the cylinder. It needs to come off in order to access the rest of the damage. this is on a Allis/Chalmers 165 tractor, diesel, 6 cylinders
