Hey Stephen: Care to discuss?greenspun.com : LUSENET : Poole's Roost II : One Thread |
Bush Conversion Story a HoaxYou probably don't remember this discussion last January, but I'd be curious to hear what sort of sources confirmed this.

Just don't want it to get missed.
-- Anonymous, March 05, 2001
Tarzan, do you happen to be already done happened?
-- Anonymous, March 05, 2001
Nope, I'm not nearly wordy enough. I don't know who Already is, but he's posted on several other threads beyond the Darrell Scott discussion, unlike you, who conveniently seems to come out only when Ain't is getting his butt kicked.

You know, I had forgotten about that one! I shall make a deal with you, Greystoke: I'll ask the guy at the station who researched it to tell me HOW he verified it. Then we can decide whether it's an urban legend or not.I remember that, at the time, he was able to to satisfy me (it wasn't that big of a deal, so I took his word for it), but it won't hurt to find out for sure.
Give me a couple of days.

Stephen, for the record, I had the above Bush "conversion story" emailed to me a couple of months ago. It looked bogus, smelled bogus, had all the earmarkings of the typical email hoax story, and so I checked it out. It is bogus, I don't have the link handy, but it wasn't "snopes."
-- Anonymous, March 05, 2001
Stephen-To tell the truth, so had I. I just got another link to Snopes in the same category.
David-
You may have seen it in one of the citations given at the end of the Snopes cite.Hollenbeck, Gail. "Pastors Ponder Religion's Role in Bush Presidency." St. Petersburg Times. 6 January 2001 (Religion, p. 3).
Lawrence, Jill. "The Evolution of George W. Bush." USA Today. 6 January 2001 28 July 2000 (p. A8).

And Tarzan, You shouldn't take any glee in being "right" on this one, as usual any possible intellect is provided by the websites you cut and paste or link too. At least in this one you actually credit your source rather than posting the whole story as your own, how refreshing, lol!
-- Anonymous, March 05, 2001
What gives you the idea I'm taking glee in this? Sure I'm glad to be right, but I'd actually forgotten about it for quite awhile, saw something that triggered my memory and asked Stephen about it. I think you're projecting.

Tarzan,I'm satisfied myself that it's a hoax. I saw your posts over at Unks and there's no need to go chasing wild hares. The problem was, I thought we had aired it on our station after verification, but I was obviously wrong (maybe it was another story? I honestly can't remember now).
Sorry that I didn't look into that sooner. It left me endorsing a false story and for that, I apologize. FWIW, a LOT of stuff like this gets circulated amongst religious types (believe me, I know!) and I spend a good bit of my time debunking it as well. From the infamous "FCC Petition" to get religion off the air to the idea that Darwin "recanted" on his deathbed, I think I've heard them all.
(But HEY! You DID know that there are human and dinosaur footprints together in a dry creek bed down in Texas, right? And that scientists have discovered Joshua's "missing day?"[g])
-- Anonymous, March 05, 2001
No need to apologize, I just thought you might have heard it from a news source and was curious about who it was, since everyone knows how rare it is for news sources to spread urban legends (LOL!).I heard about the missing day. Did you know some geologists in Russia managed to drill all the way to hell?

Did you know some geologists in Russia managed to drill all the way to hell?OK, I'll bite.
What did he find? :)

Cpr?

Stephen-Apparently, some Russian scientists were trying to drill the deepest hole in the world. Suddenly, at some insane number of feet down, the drill began spinning wildly and stopped making progress, as though it had come to an air pocket, but the depth was so immense that the scientists knew this was impossible. Somebody got the bright idea to send testing equipment down, including a microphone, and recorded the sounds of tormented souls. I know it's true because TBN did a story on it, and they wouldn't say something that wasn't true. [weg] Here's a link:
Anonymous poster-
I doubt David is CPR. The initials are all wrong.

What always amazes me most about these email hoaxes is that so many incredible stories are accepted by so many based on an email from a friend of a friend of a complete stranger. I guess if its in an email, it MUST be true. Even more amazing is the fact that many of these stories end with "Send this to as many people as you can" for one lame reason or another, like..."so we can get the word out" or "if you save just one life it will be worth it" etc., etc.The only one that seemed really silly that did indeed turn out to be real was the email tax, HR01426, which is still pending but is expected to come up for a vote next month- write your representitives and tell them to vote NO. (send this to as many people as you can before its too late...)
