Looking for a wood cookstove in NE Kansasgreenspun.com : LUSENET : Countryside : One Thread |
Good Morning! I have been an avid Countryside reader for 2 years now. Since we are recently new to the internet, this is my first post here. I am looking for a wood cookstove to put in our kitchen. Can't afford the prices of the new ones and haven't found any at auctions or antique shops. Is there anyone in NE Kansas that might be able to point me in the right direction to a stove? We would like to find one as local as possible to avoid long distance hauling/shipping. Don't mind doing some restoration work....I have been told that as long as the firebox is not cracked, most old stoves can be used? Thanks in advance to anyone who can help out here!

Hello Susan, Check and see if there are any on Ebay.com. We have been checking out for them. Many are just listed for $1.00 with the understanding that you go and pick them up. Unfortunately, the ones that we liked were in far away areas like Maine or Oregon. Maybe you will find on close to your area or maybe you can plan a vacation to the area that you find one at. Have patience. I live in NW Arkansas and there are plenty of wood ranges around here. $40 and up at auction. (Oddly I had to go 100 miles into Missouri to find a good wringer washer.) Have a friend in SE Kansas and saw a couple wood ranges in front of an antique shop in a small town there. Grew up in Iowa and would see them show up at farm auctions although couldnt say what auctions there are like now. One has to remember that the main stream generation that used such is gone or at best dieing off. Rural small farms of yore are for most part history. I like auctions and really notice that number of farm auctions is way down especially with the older type stuff. Lot of stuff I remember is mostly found in antique shops now. Oh one suggestion you might not have tried is to check out any small rural scrap metal yards. I dont mean auto salvage, I mean places that buy scrap metals. (Some small yards do both scrap and auto salvage.) They tend to set some good pieces aside for resale instead of crushing them. Especially with the explosion in the antique market. Might even contact couple and tell them what you are looking for and leave your number. You might also consider putting a "wanted" ad in your local shopper/paper.

Thanks so much for the ideas! I checked ebay and did see a couple, but alas....too expensive and too far away. I keep looking locally and maybe run a "want" ad. !

The way we found our wood cookstove when living in Maryland was by running a "wanted" ad in the paper. We received lots of calls. There were a couple of older women that commented they never thought anyone would even be interested in one so never tried to sell theirs until they saw our ad. Good way to meet some interesting older folks too.

There is a town in north east kansas called paxeco. They sell refurbished cook stoves. Looked at them once and they looked ok. If you need more info contact me.
