2,300 property taxpayers receive extra bill

A computer glitch in the city treasurer's office resulted in about 2,300 property taxpayers getting a bill this week for a payment that was already coming directly out of their bank accounts.

City Treasurer Wayne Whittow said the error came to light Wednesday. The program, new this year, allows property owners on the installment plan to have their monthly payments taken directly from a bank account.

Of the 31,000 people on the installment plan, about 2,300 signed up for the direct withdrawal program. They will be notified to disregard the bill, Whittow said.
