bitter brussel sprouts???

greenspun.com : LUSENET : Countryside : One Thread

We had a pretty good harvest of brussel sprouts this year. We didn't hasrvest untill after several frosts which is suppose to make them less bitter and more palatable.

We had some again tonite and they tasted really strong and bitter. We had some a while back and they had been steamed with approx the same result. Any idea whats up? What can we do now to improve the situation.?

John, I believe you are also in Wisconsin. I had a terrible bitter crop. Never happened before. I waited until after many frosts like you did and they were just nasty. Could it have been the weather? I am not sure about where you are, but we were awful wet this year. Just a thought.

Could it be the variety? Have you grown the same one before with good results? I don't think there are that many different varieties (certainly not like tomatoes!), but it still might be at least part of the reason.

Did you have the same amount of rainfall that you usually do? The year that it was so hot and dry early on they were yuck. I did use them in a tomato based veggie soup though and they weren't TOOOOO bad.
