Edgar Allan Poe was a genius because he opened the imagination to those who read his works. He was also a great thinker because that he could see pass all the problems in his life to write such beautiful things, and he used his talent for the benefit of others. He also went to school in London, if that contributes any.

This answer may come a little late. Genius comes in different forms, whether it be literature, music, art, science or cooking. When one creates works of genius, he or she is recognized not in present but in past as being ahead of their present time and surroundings, by the general public. However, that person is sometimes recognized as genius by their own profession. Mozart was genius by some in his own time, but not taken seriously by others of that same period. John cage was considered by some to be a fake, genius by others. Poe lives beyond his own time, because he was able to let us see more of the human psyche in a creative manner.
