I would not be surprised. Between the Fed and the Indians, they own something like 90% of AZ. I am not against Indian ownership, just Federal. Don't have any AZ figures on Federal only.

Mike: Born, raised and spent many many years there. Still have lots of family living in Utah, here and there. Can't say that I think the Federal gov't owns 80% tho. My bet is the LDS (Mormon) church does. Jan

I think the 80% figure is pretty accurate if you add up the Federal and State-owned land here. Take a look at a BLM map and the color coding tells the story; National Forests, State Forests, BLM, Indian Reservations and now our new Grand Staircase Monument are most of it. And it's not just Utah; Nevada and Arizona have huge proportions of government land too. Not sure how much the church owns, I suspect not as much as in the past, but you'd have to ask a Mormon about that one.

We're right in the middle of some of the most magnificent country imaginable. Zion to the West, Dixie Nat'l. Forest and Bryce to the North, Grand Staircase to the East, Corral Pink Sand Dunes to the South. And if you want to drive for another hour and a half or so, the North Rim of the Grand Canyon.

The down side is there aren't many ways to make a living unless you work for one of the above-mentioned government agencies. We are so blessed to be able to live here because I'm self-employed and my husband has a decent pension from his union job. We worked many, many years in the Wasteland to be able to retire here and become intentional peasants.

The LDS (Mormon) Church doesnt own any Utah land, except what it has built churches and museums and such on. I lived in Utah several years in 80s and back then the Gov. owned figure was around 80% so I'm sure it is more now.

Yes the church does own & they own plenty of land - BUT they simply were here first. I'm not part of their flock but I appreciate it when they lease out a huge chunk of downtown to the city for $1 a year to our synphony.
