We got our first egg today!greenspun.com : LUSENET : Countryside : One Thread |
To some of you this is not a monumental thing...but then there are those of you who know how big a deal this is! It seems like we have been waitng all our lives for that egg... :)I was thinking about this while I was milking this morning-we have dreamed about this life for so long-but if you had asked us just a couple of years ago if we would be raising our own milk, eggs and meat...I would never have beleieved it! Our life was so differnet then....
I am feeling especially blessed today-hope no one minds that I say I am thankful to the Father in Heaven for HIs provision for us.
Peace and blessings, Sarah

Congratulations! We were so excited we took a picture of our first 2 eggs. It is thrilling, to a homesteader to put your dreams in something and now have your results. As far as I'm concerned you can thank God for his provision all you want.

Getting that first egg is indeed very exciting! I feel sorry for people who do not think something so simple (?) can be so exciting. This past fall when my new chicks started laying, even though they weren't our first eggs, it was just as exciting! And yes, I too thank God for His many blessings.

Sarah, CONGRATULATIONS! I have that same feeling of being blessed everyday not just for the egg's, milk, fresh vegies but for the love of the life style that God has given to me. How many chickens do you have? My youngest son that is 12 yrs old gets so excited when gathering eggs, he knowes which chicken lay's in which nest he has their name in front of the nest to me they all look the same, but when he brings in the eggs he tells me which chicken his doing her job and which one is not. Hope you continue to have that special feeling of being bless. God bless.

I am sooooooooooooooo happy for you! As soon as Neil & I learn enough so we do not kill livestock (unintentionally), we will have chickens and goats and perhaps two mules..yeehaw. I cannot wait to gather eggs..how incredibly cool!!!!! God bless.

I'm so happy for you. It is still exciting when our hens start back. Tracy, I just love it when my kids find joy in the little things. Living this lifestyle teaches them appreciation for God's creation. As they grow up, material things can't hold a candle to the first egg, a new calf, or all the other firsts that are so exciting.

Congrats! My wife said that the day I got my first egg, I would have shut the door in the face of the Publisher Clearing House prize patrol, and would never have looked backed.Enjoy 'em!

I think one of the biggest blessing of homesteading is the joy we can experience in the simple things. That long awaited first egg, a doe or cow freshening, the first ripe tomato, nothing like it. I am happy for you and feel joy that you can experience it. Peace and Joy -

Cindy, I'm glad to know someone else took a picture of their first egg! When that roll of film came back, my husband thought I'd lost my mind. Now I can show him I'm not the only one who does this.

Yes it is very exciting..that first egg...Several years ago on Xmas day to be exact we received our first egg..it was froze solid but hey it was our first..even took it over to show my Dad. Congrats!

I understand totally! It is very exciting to get the first egg. When my inlaws were just in for Christmas my husband put on the video tape we have been compiling for the past year to show them our daughter in the Christmas play. Well he rewound that tape all the way back to Spring. And would you believe when we got to summer it showed all the hens and their eggs with my commentary recorded also. They all found this quite amusing. I had sort of forgotten recording this. It contained the whole homestead tour with personal intoductions to all the animals.
Just wanted to show you that I understand your enthusiasm and thankfulness.

WE have had our chickens for two years now and our ducks for more than six months. I am still excited each day that I collect "our" eggs. I appreciate my girls so much and look forward to that day when we can have our own fresh milk ! Thank God for such simple pleasures ! Good luck to ya ! Cindy

Congratulations Sarah. I am still waiting for the first time I get to collect my first egg. (We don't have chickens yet but we are working on getting the stable set up top have chickens in the tack room since we don't raise horses.) I can certainly understand how you feel as I know I will feel the same way. I keep being a bit ambivalent about getting chickens because I am so afraid that some wild thing will kill one and I will feel terrible. (I know, get over it. I will. But I am going to put up electrical barriers to hopefully keep them out.) If things go well, I may be able to get the chickens this year. If not, then next year for sure. Yippee for you and I'll let you know when I finally join you in your joy.

The first two eggs my chickens laid , a small thing on this winters day, but yet they chased my blues away , those little eggs upon the hay.

There is nothing like it!!! I have had chickens most my life, except a few years when i was away at school. Landlord wouldn't let me, go figure. As a child i loved gathering eggs in my basket. I would play with them until someone forced me to go put them away. Years later when i moved my own family to the country, i ordered my first batch of 50. The first egg was like Christmas for the kids. Our Daughter was about 7 and as we were taking the egg into the house, Jessi just stood there looking around. i finally turned and asked her what she was doing and in a very serious voice she said "looking for the Easter Bunny". She dies when i tell this story now. Expecially to her FFA friends! Congrats!! :)

Congratulations!!!I remember very well the first eggs I got. I started with 4 chickens...all heavy breeds. I put the eggs in a box and put them on the kitchen table for everyone to see.
We eventually got up to 300 chickens and I always was pleased to see a basketful of beautiful brown shelled eggs.
Are you milking cows or goats?
It all brings such blessed peace and contentment and freedom.

WONDERFUL!!!!!!!! We got our first chickens last spring. After a few days to settle in i opened the hen house for my 2 year old son and there was the most beautiful brown egg!! He said "Mommy! theres an egg in there"! I let him get it out of the nest and of course I had to go and fry this egg for him right away. Children get the biggest kick out of seeing nature in action.(Don't we all?) GOD BLESS!!!! Enjoy youe chickens!
