So you think you're safe browsing the Web? :)

If you're in the mood for a little fun, make sure JavaScript is enabled in your copy of Netscape 4, then click this little link . . . :)

This isn't specific to Netscape; similar bugs exist in IE. See Georgi Guninski's security pages for more information.

NOW you know why I usually keep both Java and Javascript disabled on my computer. :)

I've never thought much about security cause my home puter is just for prowling around. No financial or other personal stuff hereon. Should I worry? What's the worst?

I have java off, but not javascript, loose too much ability doing that for my taste. Running ie5 now, so my vulnerbilities are compatible across all the neat Microsoft apps such as outlook, etc. ;)

Carlos,

I would think that if you don't store any important personal info, such as credit card numbers, on your computer, you should be OK.

Still, I keep javascript disabled unless I absolutely need it, primarily because a lot of Web sites now use it to create annoying pop-up windows. :)

In either Netscape or IE, if you move your temporary internet files cache to a location other than the default, the exploit uncovered by Mr. Guninski cannot occur. Fact.

Another little program called the Proxomitron provides another modicum of security against a plethora of security holes, not the least of which is the little-known 'web bugs' --

Thanks, CL.

I didn't think of that. I believe you're right. :)

Thanks for the link. I might give that one a try.

Welk'm, Stephen.

I have to know these things. It's my job! ;-)

BTW --

In order for the Proxomitron to block 'web bugs', an add-on plug-in filter is necessary.

But having read what your friend Richard Smith has said about them things, I've felt a need to have that block in place. It sure doesn't hurt to have it.

3 things:

Use anonymizer, idzap, keepitsecret, etc;

Use ZoneAlarm;

Stephen, the sites that have the most pop-ups are porno sites....what are you doing surfing those???

surfed in got this from Zonealarm

"The firewall has blocked Internet access to your computer (UDP Port ###) from 65.32.64.183 (UDP Port ###)"

"The firewall has blocked Internet access to hv.greenspun.com (18.43.4.122) (HTTP) from your computer."

Cool, huh!
