Converting MPEG2 to MPEG1/AVI ... ?

greenspun.com : LUSENET : Video CD : One Thread

I have come into the possesion of some SVCDs and am wanting to convert the video to MPEG1 or even just AVI format. I have tried to De-Multiplex/decode video stream/re-Mutliplex using TMPEGenc, but to no avail. Do you know of a Windows9x program that can convert MPEG2's to MPEG1/AVI?

TIA, Tappan

One simple solution which I have used to record some Southpark episoded is to connect you DVD player to your capture card and record it that way.

That's my problem... I don't have a DVD player. I need to convert the MPEG2's into a format that I can read. Even after ripping the MPEG2 files off of the SVCD, I can't get PowerDVD to play it. So... I need to convert it to something else... like MPEG1/AVI. It doesn't have to even be software... if someone could point me in the direction of an MPEG2 codec for Win9x I'd be very grateful.

TIA,

Have you try to Flask it?

-- lnguyen (wingstarzz@hotmail.com), December 21, 2000.

Just buy a DVD player, they are down to $149 and even less at some retail stores. It's not worth the time and headache to try to figure it out (much less do it) digitally.

Why not just get a software SVCD player?

Use VCDgear2.0 to rip the mpg from the SVCD disk. This mpg is now available to be view if you system has a DVD drive and hardware/software player for it. If not then you can use flaskmpeg to convert it to either AVI(mpeg4) or mpeg1. The VCDgear2.0 job is not that long (5 min), but the flaskmpeg job may be very long if your system is slow. flaskmpeg is available at http://go.to/flaskmpeg and vcdgear2.0 is available at www.vcdgear.com. If you don't want to go to all the flaskmpeg trouble, then just simple go to www.elecard.com and download the mpeg2 decoder to plug into your friendly window media player so that you can play mpeg2 with it.

1) I don't have a DVD player. 2) My computer wouldn't play DVD/SVCD's anyway, it being a p133. 3) FlaskMPEG crashes as soon as it goes to encode.

I've tried using VirtualDub to convert it to AVI, but it won't parse/load the MPEG2.

OK, i see. You are limiting to your system. Did you used vcdgear to to the copying for you or you just drag the *.mpg from the SVCD disc onto the hard disk? The file header of the SVCD's *.mpg has to be changed back to mpeg2 standard. VCDgear will do that for you. Once you have done that, then use flask to do the encoding. Flask probably crash since it doesn't have the necessary file header parser for the SVCD's *.mpg. Furthermore, if you down load elecard's mpeg2 codec, your computer's window media player will be able to open the mpeg2 file and play it for you without any encoding.

1. install WinVCR (I found it on Maximum CD magazine) 2. uninstall it without removing the system files. 3. restart and you should have the Ligos mpeg2 decoder still in the filter list. i.e. you can play Mpeg2 with active movie or mplayer!!!

DVD2AVI is software that decodes mpeg2 to d2v/avi and wav, but is take a long time and a lot of disk space. I'd covert to d2v... Then you have to turn the d2v to avi with VFAPIConv-EN (very fast). Next convert the wav to mp2 with TOOLAME and re-encode the avi and mp2 into mpeg1 with TMPGEnc. It's not all that hard but if your new to the software or you have a slower cpu it can take up to 3 days to complete. Took me 2 days on a p3 600, 256meg's ram

Okay, 1)if powerDVD doesn't play it, it's not valid. 2)if it is valid, then to rip it, you need TMPEGEnc and the mpeg-2 plug-in which is available at www.vcdhelp.com. 3)if none of that works, get a new os; either win98 or winXP will do the trick. 4)if still nothing works, look at vcdhelp's compatibility list and find an svcd- compatible DVD player and buy it. If it works do video capture, if not, then it's not valid. Get rid of the SVCDs, they're worthless. And don't use them as toilet paper; they will hurt.

The answer was right with dvd2avi..(1 file for sound, and 1 for video).. personally i rip it out with high divx 4 or 5 bitrate, then use winamp to convert the mp2 or watever to wave... then join together and compress with vdub.

then use vdub with watever filter you want to add.

btw, there IS a codec to watch mpeg2... i think it was on codeccorner.com. cant remember exactly.

i'm still lookin for the one that will watch it from cd also... accidental erase.

I'm having the same problem...but I'm using a mac. I have tried VCDgear and used convert Mpg to Mpg with the toast VCD image button clicked. I then burned to CDR using Toast Titanium and the VCD option. My Pioneer set top DVD now accepts this as a VCD but the playback is choppy on sound and vision with the odd bit of green blocking.

How can I get round this on a mac?

Try to get a good software DVD player like InterVideo WinDVD. I tried it and it worked perfectly to my satisfaction. Also it has loads of sound eiting features like SRS and reverb etc. its a good try.

Link: www.intervideo.com and go to windvd player and get a trial.

Bye

This Blazer MediaConvert don't resolve everything for Video...the program always NOT RESPONDING, so i have to close it from Task Manager...can't convert MPEG-1 and MPEG-2 to AVI, You call it a good program ?

-- Ambiguity (ambiguityk@yahoo.com), June 06, 2003.

well .... i just recently had the same problem .... but , as i've found .. i can use Nero burning rom .. chose Video CD , add the file u have copied from ... the damn SVCD , and chose the "Re-encode the video file" option ... if it is a mpeg-2 format , nero will detect it .. and ask u to re-encode it .... i tried it with small files .. it takes long time i don't know why !! and u must have already installed Nero Mpeg2/SVCD plug-in

i hope this works ...... try it and tell me .... ;)

Best wishes .. momoaal@hotmail.com Cairo, Egypt ..
