Simple question 1 word in and out. What is the word the "boy" uses and then says they are like dreams, and to be regarded as such? I find that this episode is taped over with wrestling. I was trying to explain different theories of time to my mother and I wanted to use that as an example, but the word was gone so I just left the point out. Lost, like so many other moments in a stream of time I'm cursed not to understand.

why do you guys call her fon?
-- scafandrah (scafandrah@yahoo.com), December 05, 2000.
Actually, it was supposed to be Aeon, with the A and E merged together. At some point, the software must've changed... BTW, I think the line is "composite things are like dreams".
-- Paul (gilbreathfamily@worldnet.att.net), December 06, 2000.
Thanks that it, the exact word, its perfect. Thank you paul!
-- nadar (nadar@BigPoppaPump.zzn.com), December 06, 2000.
Like dreams!!!
-- Barb e (Suesuesbeo@aol.com), December 07, 2000.
Do I hve it wrong, whats with the excalamtion points?
-- nadar (nadar@BigPoppaPump.zzn.com), December 07, 2000.
Ha! After reading Pauls' post, I realized that this line may be Peter Chung's influence on the writer of Chronophasia, or it could even be his own words for all I know. At any rate, he did tell us that he was influenced in his animation by his own dreams, maybe this is the secret right here to 'Flux'. These dreamlike episodes should be watched from another viewpoint entirely.
-- Barb e (Suesuesbeo@aol.com), December 09, 2000.
Well it looks like you figured it out. The whole thing is based on dreams. I thought maybe this episode was writen around a theory of time, but it my well have been written around a dream about time. I have dream myself were I get to do the same thing over again, as though I must make the right series of event happen. Its just as in this episode its never the exact same. I wish now I still had this episode so I could watch it with your insight. Shit. By the way I thought the "key" to Flux was that it was easy to turn into porn. Good reading, BArB E.
-- NAdar (nadar@BigPoppaPump.zzn.com), December 09, 2000.
Hmm, on second thought this is pretty lame. Although the thought did occur to me that Monica may symbolize the dream state, (no rulers, no government...just you're free thoughts, and Beronica being a police state, may symbolize the waking world, where you're mind is once again usurped by other peoples rules and ideas. But after that the show is just creative genius.
-- Barb e (Suesuesbeo@aol.com), December 10, 2000.
So I get behind your idea then you fuck me. Thanks a bunch. I can't beleive I wasted all that time shining your ass. Just kidding. I think that if you take the "key" aspect out of your theory, and relace it with an "angle" aspect, we may just have a working theory. In some respects these episodes are dream like, so your not competely wrong.
-- nadar (nadar@BigPoppaPump.zzn.com), December 10, 2000.
What is beronica?
-- nadar (nadar@BigPoppaPump.zzn.com), December 10, 2000.
Nadar, what's with the attack on Barb E? I've read your post and it's hard not to reach the conclusion that you've got a problem with the lady, or with women in general. Do us all a favor and stay away from this forum until you've taken a cold shower or a walk after having perused some of those little boy websites.
-- RIP (JackReaper@aol.com), December 10, 2000.
I think you're reading too much into it.
-- Paul (gilbreathfamily@worldnet.att.net), December 11, 2000.
Huh? I think that I meant it as a joke. Barb has been one of the more interesting people on this forum, she responds to almost everything. She is the one you can count on! I don't have a problem with women, I do not peruse any child porn sites! It seemed a little funny she has an idea, I think its good, she pulls out, I'm left with supporting an idea that the creator doesn't want.

All composite things are like a dream, like a fantasy Like a bubble and a shadow, like a dewdrop and a flash of lightning. They are thus to be regarded.--The Diamond Sutra

Hey, thanks!
-- Paul (gilbreathfamily@worldnet.att.net), December 21, 2000.
It's great to hear from another Flux person, you always have such interesting stories to tell. I have plenty of questions (not all Chronophasia related), but will save them for later; anyway, know that Aeon Flux still has a very large following. Once seen, never forgotten. Feel free to stop by anytime!
-- Paul (gilbreathfamily@worldnet.att.net), December 21, 2000.
Hey, wait a minute, is he quoting Peter Gaffney, or is that actually posted by Peter Gaffney?

In the version of the sutra I have, the translation is:"...all the mind's arbitrary conceptions of matter, phenomena, and of all conditioning factors and all conceptions and ideas relating thereto are like a dream, a phantasm, a bubble, a shadow, the evanescent dew, the lightning's flash."
Just thought hearing it put a little differently might help.
-- Matthew Rebholz (matrebholz@yahoo.com), December 21, 2000.
I think it's him, Barb, I've never seen that email address before.
-- Paul (gilbreathfamily@worldnet.att.net), December 21, 2000.
Mat, the sutra are from the sermons of Buddha? How beautiful, than this episode is really mystical, isn't it? Which it seemed to be when we watched it, didn't it? BTW, this forum is an ever startlingly fascinating place!
-- Barb e. (Suesuesbeo@aol.com), December 21, 2000.
I like where this is going but it was supposed to be a simple question in and out. That what the title means but no one ever picks apart the meanings of what I write exept for that Jack Reaper guy. I have nothing meaningful to add.
-- nadar (nadar@BigPoppaPump.zzn.com), December 21, 2000.
Here's what I could dig up on the Diamond Sutra from my source ("A Buddhist Bible" edited by Dwight Goddard). It's a Sanskrit text concerning the Six Paramitas - "the classical 'perfections' of giving, morality, patience, zeal, focused meditation, and wisdom." I had always suspected that Aeon Flux had underlying Buddhist influences, but now it's confirmed. I wonder if there are any other direct referrences or inspired bits...

The Demiurge.
-- Barb e. (Suesuesbeo@aol.com), December 22, 2000.
That only seems to be Asian or Buddhist in appearance. I seem to remember that there is an Asian deity that holds balls of silk in its hands like the Demiurge did...

The Diamond of the Perfection of Transcendental Wisdom- Section XXXII. The Delusion of AppearancesSubhuti, someone might fill innumerable worlds with the seven treasures and give all away in gifts of alms, but if any good man or any good woman awakes the thought of Englightenment and takes even only four lines from this Discourse, reciting, using, receiving, retaining and spreading them abroad and explaining them for the benefit of others, it will be far more meritorious. Now in what manner may he explain them to others? By detachment from appearances- abiding in Real Truth-So I tell you-
Thus shall you think of all this fleeting world:
A star at dawn, a bubble in a stream; A flash of lightening in a summer cloud, A flickering lamp, a phantom, and a dream.
Section XVII. No one attains Transcendental Wisdom Subhuti is taught that the Bodhisattvas 'who are wholly devoid of any conception of seperate selfhood are truthfully called Bodhisattvas'. http://web.mit.edu/stclair/www/diamond.html.
And Aeon? We see her not as a 'separate self' but as she is 'reincarnated;' wearing the many outfits that flash before us? The last 'Aeon' a mom, with her son. Hasn't Aeon died again and again, how can you die again and again? You must be born again and again, and so there is no 'seperate self' or entity, and so Aeon is evidently shown a secret of life in this episode by this 'boy', who existed before all the others.

I know the last post on this subject was a long time ago, but i think this is probably the most interesting of the third season aeon flux episodes. What do you guys think the name of this episode means? chrono obviously indicates something to do with time. -phasia, according to my dictionary, indicates a speech disorder (eg, aphasia, the inability to form sentences). that said, what would chronophasia mean? perhaps the inability to distinguish between different tenses? but i think not recognizing verbal tenses would mean you couldn't recognize the passing of time, or the fact that events can occur in different parts of time. I don't know very much about theories of time or anything, but this kind of makes sense when you apply the 'insanity' trevor was talking about to aeon... and the close relation of linguistics to human logic and the overall human experience (im pretty sure most people think using words when thinking of time oriented things, or other rigidly structured ideas. things more subjective like dreams are more often visualised. At least this is how it seems to me.) Do you think any of this has any revelance to this episode? or do you think it was just a cool sounding name? (chronophasia does sound pretty cool)

I think that that was covered in the past but the meaning for your personal benifit, is as the consesus seemed to be time- sickness. That what I remeber. This is truely a great work of art. This episode I mean, standing on it own its so much smaller than if you think into the theory of times true meaning put forth. This particular episode is very resposible for my current intrest in the time travel division of science. It is of great personal signfigance so I'm slightly biased. As for verbage, that is the most commmon form of human intellect. I don't think most can even conceive of smarts, in terms other than words adn numbers. That is why we've had such a hard time figuring an animals intellect. There are certain people who have a "disabilty" that makes them unable to think in words, they have a harder time with speach but have an incredible memory for visual things(or music maybe). They think in ways the average person can't, they see thing is a differnt angle. This ep perhaps is pushing us to see things differently. Time isn't on a clock, light doesn't measure time, it takes place in the mind. Does this seem fair? I hope on your track ghostmeat.

To add my meager two cents about the name Chronophasia only (because I will not even posture myself to have a thorough enough understanding of this episode's deepest meanings and significance to speak at length about them)But as to the name "Chronophasia"
I would define it as the inability to form time into a complete sentence or logical order. The idea that human beings attempt to bring an order or sequence to time, which cannot be bound by something as trivial as a human need or desire for order. I think that perhaps this may explain to some extent that despite efforts to make sense of time, time is really the ruler in our universe. Thus why composite things are like dreams. Things in our world are composites because they are only pieces of the whole, nothing is complete, just as dreams are never complete, just as time will never be complete. Even in the absence of recognition or order, time will continue to exist in such a way that we will never be able to make completely logical sentences out of it.
- wow. seemed I got off on a rant there. sorry about the length everyone.

That is very good thinking, thats what the universal happiness probably was a understanding of what our "function" in the grand sceme was. The baby knew but we all forgot, everone else who saw the scope of the big picture was driven insane. When trever learns what the boy knows instead of making a speach about composite things, he goes mad "We, were never here, we were always here." "Always will be." So given the idea of our perception time being is like a transient wisp with no "handholds", as well as truely comprehending infinity drove all others to madness and death. The boy never in our terms waited for Aeon, all he waited for was for their perception to meet. This is why he forced her he knew, being of all time, that no other human offered him this kind of association. So while they where breifly in similar areas of percption he had his one shot at any kind of love. See what I mean is that she saw all possible outcomes of the certain space in time, so she was in those spaces of time just like the boy. No one else was aware only she. Now someone might say the baby the baby has the power but its not much of a freind "I bring her things." they don't interact on level feild, so he still needed sombody. Maybe this is not so clear to read but this ep. is hard no matter how much you think on it.

1. At one point the boy says that "all that rises must converge." So what do you all think he means by this? This phrase is also the title of a book by Flannery O'Connor, which I haven't read but am pretty sure predates AF. Is it an older allusion too?2. I think that "chronophasia" is a made up word, but it should mean something like "speaking [about] time," based on its etymology. Anyone have any idea what this might mean in the context of the episode?
I have just discovered this list and have spent the last 3 hours reading old threads. I am writing on this thread because I figured there's no need to start yet another thread, since there are already 5 or 6 on this episode.
Anyone interested in the interpretation of AF (in general) as a negative utopia?
