Contacts and Sunglasses? (On chickens)greenspun.com : LUSENET : Countryside : One Thread |
It seems that at my place of employment an individual is having a great time trying to convince me that roosters wear sunglasses. This I can somewhat believe, but contacts. That I have a hard time believing. This of course only pertains to breeding roosters on a large poultry farm. Right? So, I really need an answer since I've already lost $5 on the sunglasses, and I refuse to bet on the contacts. I may be from the city but, I hope I'm not that stupid! Thanks!

Sunglasses, maybe, perhaps something like blinders, or goggles to keep them from fighting each other. But contacts, I don't think so! Annie in SE OH.

Bunkie, it depends on what part of the U.S. you are from. Southern roosters will sometimes wear sunglasses because they are closer to the equator and the sun is stronger and therefore much harder on their eyes. Since the rooster has to spend so much time watching the flock, he can sometimes get eye strain without them. However, more importantly, the southern rooster has to wear that white sun screen stuff on his beak because of the sun's rays. Otherwise he gets sunburn. Northern roosters on the other hand only have to wear sunglasses occasionally in the winter when the sun reflecting off of the snow can bother their eyes. Contacts, on the other hand have no sun screening value so they defintely don't use them. Besides, they would have some difficulty putting them in because the claws on their feet would tend to scratch their cornea if they tried to insert them. Don't fall for the contacts one but they owe you your five bucks back on the sunglasses one because the southern rooster definitely uses them.

bunkie I dont know about roosters, but our neighbors work chickens for a living, they debeak, vaccinate, load, and yes they put contacts on several thousand pullets one time. I don't think it had the desired effect as they have not done it since. I don't know the reason for it either. Kevin in southern Mo
