Gore again pushes statewide Florida count

WASHINGTON, Nov 28 (AFP) -

Democratic White House hopeful Al Gore on Tuesday reiterated his call on Republican rival George W. Bush to agree to a statewide manual recount in Florida that he said would be completed in seven days.

"This is a time to count every vote and not to run out the clock," the vice president said in a brief statement outside his official residence here, rebuking the Texas governor for rejecting the offer earlier in the day.

Ain't,

They say that the classic stages for grief and loss go like this: Denial, Anger, Depression, Acceptance (the infamous "DADA").

To my great amazement, Gore is still in the Denial stage, perhaps just now moving into Anger.

Give credit where due: it's a brilliant play on his part, asking that there be Yet Still Another Count in Florida. If the American People buy it (thus far, thankfully, they haven't), it makes him appear to be the reasonable one and Bush the ornery holdout.

And lest anyone argue that Gore's suggestion is fair, it's pure politics and grandstanding. For Florida to have Yet Still Another Count (statewide or not) would require, at the very least, a Florida Supreme Court order (it was *THEY*, and not Bush, who set the 5PM deadline, after all) ... or some extraordinary action by the legislature.

Neither is very likely, so he's grasping at straws.
