SB-22s and F80

greenspun.com : LUSENET : Camera Equipment : One Thread

Hi, The SB-22s AF assist light does not work together with F80. Does anyone out there know if this can be fixed somehow. It must be quite embarassing for Nikon when their specification of the SB-22s states that the AF assist light works with any AF camera irregardless of brand!

Thanks, Nisse

I find that very hard to believe, Nils. SB-22 will not even mount on a Minolta AF camera, how would the AF light know when to turn on?

Well, let me clarify. On Nikons swedish website they (not me) claim that the AF Assist light works with and AF SLR. The SB-22s manual actually does not say that, they state that the AF Assist light works with any Nikon AF SLR. In any case this is not true. The SB-22s does not work as advertised wirh F80 (at least I can not make it work).

The F80 was launched at about the same time as the SB-22s. Since the flash works correct with other Nikon bodies and the F80 works correct with other Speedlights they must have made an effort to make sure the two (F80 and SB-22s) do not work.

Even more annoying is that the F80 specification lists the SB-22s as one of the compatible speedlights.

My thought with this question was to find out if there is anyone that knows if this can be fixed. If a nikon service centre can do anything or if someone has found a hack that I can do myself. I assume (have not checked) that the hotshoe contacts are the same for all (modern) Nikon bodies. The F80 must send some sort of signal to the flash to trigger the AF assist light since other speedlights work. For some reason this signal is not picked up by the flash. I could imagine some sort of hack to get the signal from the body to the flash and would like to find out if someone has made this work.

Is your F80 set to single or continuous servo AF? I'm pretty sure that my N6006 had to be set to single servo to light the assist light on my SB-20.

The same problem with my SB-20 and N80 combination. I think it is becouse N80 has own AF assist light beam (only N60 and N65 from all Nikon AF SLR have it).

The N(f)80 needs to have the focus on single servo for the AF assist beam to work.
