I burned a CDR VCD image with Toast on my Mac. My Samsung DVD-611 will not play it. It also does not play CDRs that are audio CDs. It does play store bought DVDs fine. Can anyone help me understand why it won't play CDRs?

Most DVD players will not play homemade VCD's on a CD-R disks. A lot of them will play a VCD on a CD-RW disk.

A list of players that can & can't play cdr/cdrw can be found at www.vcdhelper.com
Your player is listed as being able to play cdrw "sometimes".
You are victim 1,000,000,000 of assuming that your dvd player will play cdr/cdrw. I would replace your player with one listed as working to play cdr/cdrw.

My friend's SONY DVD unit could never play any CD-R until I tried it with my ACER-4X CD-RW, which played well. His son then started burning on a brand called Lead-Data CD-RW, which would not play at all on the same machine. You could try out the ACER-4X CD-RW media.

My Samsung DVD-611 plays both cdrs and cdrws fine. Allthough it's pretty skippy on VCD's burned to cdr. VCD burned on TDK's cdr with HP 9100 is so blocky that is is unwatcheable. A VCD burned on Princo's cdr with Mitsumi's burner plays fine.

It can play CDR, if your unit doesn't play, go to samsung service and let him repair your unit, i'm waiting for more than 1 month for mine who is in repair for the same question, but i can play for one month, and then suddently begin to fail, the technician doesn't know yet what it's wrong, they have changed the mainboard and now the want to change the optics, by the moment i cannot use my unit for 1 month....

Samsungs are picky with the kind of media (CD-R) you're using. CD-R's made by Princo or Samsung will work fine for both VCD and CD Audio in most cases.
