Hello, I am concerned tonight. I have a 1 year old Pygmy/Swiss Alpine. She is urinating with blood. It is a pink urine. Is this mean she is in "heat"? Okay I will wait patiently (ha ha) for someone to come and tell me whats up. Thanks Karole

Hi,

It can be the result of a few things. what comes to my mind is the possibility she was hit hard in her kidneys... that can cause that type of situation. Its possible a heat could do that but i have not encoutered it yet. Good luck.

Hi Karole, this can really be alot of things, and unless she has a temp to go along with this pink urine I wouldn't be concerened. You can also catch some of this urine and have the vet tell you if it is blood or not. Certain vegetables like beets can cause the urine to be red, so can the red swiss chard (rubarb). Some loose minerals also have red food dye on their labels. This was some of the many things that were brought up on another list about this topic. No blood when a doe is in heat, though a doe who kidded late here one year had some blood, though it was old like lochia, more like a discharge when she came into heat the very next month after kidding. I know that the SMPZ tablets that are really nothing but sulfa pills that are given to women with bladder infections are also dosed (and so ironically for much less money) by your vet, is what is used for bladder infections, cocci etc. in goats. Couldn't see how putting her on a sulfa drug could hurt, even Dimethox or Albon. Vicki

Vicki, red swiss chard and rhubarb are *not* the same thing!! They might both cause the same effect, I don't know about that, but definitely they are different plants!!

No I meant that it is called by both names both the green kind of swiss chard and rubarb (or red) swiss chard! Course love that regular rubarb anyway, but oh please don't feed the leaves to the goats!!! My asparagus patch is my best Y2K indulgence! All for me, no one here eats it! YUMM! Vicki

Albon and Dimethox are both sulfadimethoxzine(commonly used in treatment of coccidiosis ). The thing to be wary of with sulfa drugs is that they can cause immune mediated problems. Sulfa drugs should be used only with great care. I wouldn't use ANY antibiotics unless I knew for sure what I was treating. The over use and mis-use of antibiotics can cause problems with resistant strains of infection. It may also mask infection if a culture is run on the urine at a later date. I know we are trying to save money, but sometimes you can do more harm than good. BTW if you have a microscope to do fecal exams, you could look for blood cells in the urine on that or get inexpensive urinalysis stips. The first thing I would do is monitor temperature.
