Need suggestions for roasting and seasoning pumkin seeds?

greenspun.com : LUSENET : Countryside : One Thread

We don't celebrate Halloween but I did buy the kids a pumkin to carve a happy face on, and we have all these seeds, I know you can toast them in the oven, but at what degrees, what kind of seasoning besides just salt, is best, do I put a little butter? How about how you season a chex mix? I want the kids to learn we don't waste or throw away good food like this and to teach them how to use all we have. Thanks

Hi Carol;

What I usually do is after cleaning the seeds off and soaking in salt water for an hour or so, I drain the seeds well. Then I toss some seasoning salt, onion, garlic, chili, and/or cumin powder over the seeds and toss to lightly coat. Spray a baking sheet with oil, and spread the seeds in a single layer. Bake at 350 degrees 'til light brown. Yummmmm.

I put a couple tablespoons of oil in a baking pan, then put the clean seeds in the pan, generously sprinkle them with brown sugar and cinnamon, stirring until they are well coated, then drizzle honey over them, stir again. Bake for about 30 minute, spoon onto baking sheet and allow to cool. It makes pumpkin seed candy.
