I'm interested in the murder of a lawyer that took place in 1990, I'm not sure of the date or even the month. Is there any way to search this? I believe the last name if this lawyer was Solem.

S.F. Chronicle is on microfilm at many libraries. There is also a Chronicle index and you can look up the name in the index. My recall is the index started early in the '90s, but I can't recall what year. You can also search for and I believe obtain archived stories at the Chronicle's online site. You might search there first.
