How to remove husks from Black Walnutsgreenspun.com : LUSENET : Countryside : One Thread |
I have finally gotten my place in the country, alas land only. I have lots of black walnut trees loaded with nuts. Is there a sane somewhat easy way to remove the husks? Is there any kind of tool or gizmo? I have bags and bags of nuts to dehusk. Help!!!

A hammer works nicely, wear rubber gloves. Some people spread them in the driveway and drive over them.

Best way I foud to get the nut opened is to pick them, then lay them in the driveway and drive over them. it works great. the hard part is digging out the meat. But its well worth the time. In a countryside mag a few yrs back there was an article about cracking black walnuts. hope this helps.

An old crank corn sheller that bolts to a work table works great for us.

June, to husk black walnuts, put them in sacks of burlap and drive on them, being sure to keep the whole thing dry. Then to crack them, try freezing a few and see if that makes it easier to crack and pick. We freeze pecans and pinons before working with them, then also freeze them to keep. Maureen
