DID POe HAVE SEX WITH DEAD PEOPLE?

greenspun.com : LUSENET : The Work of Edgar Allan Poe : One Thread

O.K. I've heard that Edger Allan Poe was adicted to having sex with corpes? Is this true?

Answers

Poe (through his writting techniques) Often reffered to screwing corpses. Although he didn't literally say or do this, he metaphorically induced these feelings into poetry. For and Example: The Rainwalkers where he subconsiously refered to the lower class society being screwed over to death by the upper class society. This is my opinion and this is what I interpreted from reading his work.

-- Anonymous, October 11, 2000

We don't actually know if he did this or not, but, as I stated in a previous thread on this subject, a lot of his writing DOES allude to necrophilic practices and desires. Beautiful women are frequently placed side by side with death and graves in his stories. The combination of eroticism and corpses in this way can only mean one thing.

-- Anonymous, October 11, 2000

yes poe does allude to that in his stories, and for the rest of you who cant respond in a mature manner, u need to leave because not only are u a disgrace to this site u are a disgrace to Poe himself

-- Anonymous, November 04, 2000

considering he married his 13 year old cousin when he was 26 it would not suprise me

-- Anonymous, November 20, 2000

Just because Poe wrote of having sex with corpse doesnt mean that he actually did. It was just his style of wriring. Poe also wrote detecive stories but that doesnt mean that he was actually a detective. Poe was a very unique writer who had a style way more intereting than a lot of other writers of his time

The thing about the question that bothers me is the ignorance behind it. Do people take everything on the literal level these days? It's no wonder this society is plagued or looked upon as having the problems we do. I didn't know Poe personally, but I would assume he's was like most people who lose those close to them by death, saddened, filled with guilt and despair, angry, etc. On top of all this, he was a genius and knew how to express himself in a way that most people don't. Oh, not to mention the alcoholism from which he apparently suffered (although who knows)...So, add all these factors together and you're going to get exaggerated, fictinal stories based on suppressed feelings. You can't take everything for face value, and I agree with Kate whoever, I wish people could be more mature about things, or should I say, not so ignorant.

-- Anonymous, December 07, 2000

While I totally agree with Cathy, can't we let this thread die a natural death? Or, perhaps, a nice prematural burial at least?

-- Anonymous, December 07, 2000

From all what I've read about Edgar Allan Poe especially the author's bibliography, I think that poe's works were but an exploration of his own mind, an imagination pushed to it's extremity which mixed fiction with reality. Poe's life went on in a series of misfortunes and failures at an extent that he completely fell in despair. Therefore, the corpses and the dead he refers to in his works are only symbols of his agony and mischief. Finally, I hope that people will understand things in their own and real context, not to dishonour the memory of the dead. thanks

-- Anonymous, December 09, 2000

Yes, yes he did. Right up the arse

The sorrow falls shigh of the name giving. Traggic dismay oh believer. From a far reach the pen does qwell to the senses; an for Poe this drama unveiled life's pitter sweet.....That is from me.If Poe wants to highten the pleasure through profanity, assuradly he took many lovers.

With a heart full of grief, yet reluctantly, and oppressed with awe, I made my way to the bed-chamber of the departed. The room was large, and very dark, and at every step within its gloomy precincts I encountered the paraphernalia of the grave. The coffin, so a menial told me, lay surrounded by the curtains of yonder bed, and in that coffin, he whisperingly assured me, was all that remained of Berenice. Who was it asked me would I not look upon the corpse? I had seen the lips of no one move, yet the question had been demanded, and the echo of the syllables still lingered in the room. It was impossible to refuse; and with a sense of suffocation I dragged myself to the side of the bed. Gently I uplifted the draperies of the curtains.

As I let them fall they descended upon my shoulders, and shutting me thus out from the living, enclosed me in the strictest communion with the deceased.

The very atmosphere was redolent of death. The peculiar smell of the coffin sickened me; and I fancied a deleterious odor was already exhaling from the body. I would have given worlds to escape — to fly from the pernicious influence of mortality — to breathe once again the pure air of the eternal heavens. But I had no longer the power to move — my knees tottered beneath me — and I remained rooted to the spot, and gazing upon the frightful length of the rigid body as it lay outstretched in the dark coffin without a lid.

God of heaven! — is it possible? Is it my brain that reels — or was it indeed the finger of the enshrouded dead that stirred in the white cerement that bound it? Frozen with unutterable awe I slowly raised my eyes to the countenance of the corpse. There had been a band around the jaws, but, I know not how, it was broken asunder. The livid lips were wreathed into a species of smile, and, through the enveloping gloom, once again there glared upon me in too palpable reality, the white and glistening, and ghastly teeth of Berenice. I sprang convulsively from the bed, and, uttering no word, rushed forth a maniac from that apartment of triple horror, and mystery, and death.

(from "Berenice")

Now, honestly, what does that tell you?

You guys, that is in appropriate, it is not true, it's like saying," Hey! Did you have sex with your mother." OF COURSE HE DIDNT!

Are you familiar with his work?

-- Anonymous, January 07, 2001

Im dead and he screwed me a few times, so yes he did!

-- Anonymous, January 13, 2001

i don't think poe was a necrophiliac. don't believe everything that you hear. there are a lot of poe myths out there. develop a healthy skepticism. though throughout his life, you will find if you reasearch it, he was constantly surrounded with death. just about every woman that he loved died of tuberculosis. he wrote a lot about death probably because that has been a big part of his life. is anne rice really a vampire? is the author who wrote the hannibal lecter series really a cannibal? is marilyn manson really as sick as he portrays himself? ozzy osborne? i don't think so.

-- Anonymous, January 29, 2001

Oh seriously people...necrophilia is a mental condition, not a state of perversity anyway. Besides, any metaphor could mean anything. As for Marylin Manson, his surname gives the idea that yes, he is as sick as he acts.

-- Anonymous, January 30, 2001

I agree with John, i think it is totally possible. I mean u read some of his stuff right, the man was a total screw ball.

-- Anonymous, February 01, 2001

It makes me sad to think that if a man is capable of writing such amazing works like the pit and the pendulum and the raven. Could have his entire works and life ripped apart by people critsizing him on the bases of a rumour, or the way that some feelings are portrayed in his writings. I personally could cared less if he did practise necrophillia. The man was and still is a Geneius...

-- Anonymous, February 05, 2001

Why do people always seek to find out things which do not concern them? Perhaps he did screw corpses, perhaps he didn't. He was a brilliant writer who deserves more respect than that. Not just him for that matter, people are constantly asking the famous about their sexuality and personal life. Is it relevant?! It is rude and intrusive to ask questions like these. It is a bit strange to have sex with corpses, but just like i often think of killing people, but would not necessarily do it, Poe may have thought about it and expressed it in his work, but maybe not have done it. I think that crystal who first introduced the question is immature and lacks respect. A persons sex life certainly doesn't determine whether or not hey are a good person. Unless they fall under the category of what some people call rapists and who i like to call weak, insecure beings who take advantage of others because they cannot/do not want to control themselves! I hope we can all just drop the idea of poe and necrophelia and talk about his good points...

-- Anonymous, February 06, 2001

I don't no,I don't suppose anything.I don't give a fuck. But I have noticed that ur message has MANY answers. I see ppl are still interesting in screwing;that's normal,me too. But some sure would like to screw with a dead girl/guy...That's still normal. Well,I sayto this fucking world, full of fucking ppl. Respect Poe. He couldn't screw. He wanted to... Ciao,Maria...

-- Anonymous, February 09, 2001

yes he did. i used to be dead and he rooted me often.

-- Anonymous, February 17, 2001

Anything is possible. I think that it is impossible to say without digging the man up and playing twenty questions. Having sex with dead people?...Would you? I don't think so. PLease reply someone to the list who really has sex with dead people. Does it make a squelching sound?

-- Anonymous, February 17, 2001

It would depend on how fresh it was.

-- Anonymous, February 27, 2001

I'm telling you guys.Allan Poe is on CRACK!That's why he wrote having sex with dead corpses in hius works.

-- Anonymous, February 28, 2001

Ya'll are all sick perverts. Poe was a great writer (even though he had many things come in his way). It is a miracle that his writings were as good as they were with his drinking habit and all. Thinking that he was adicted to making love to dead people is just nasty even if you are a drunk.

-- Anonymous, March 01, 2001

-- Anonymous, March 11, 2001

HAHAHAHAHHAHAHAHHAHAHA OMG U PEOPLE ARE ALL SO DUMB!~ LOOK AT WHAT U WRITE!

-- Anonymous, March 19, 2001

I think that Poe's writing reflected the madness he saw in the world around him. If any of you would really think about the things he writes and aply them to the world of yesterday and not today then you would know what he was talking about.

-- Anonymous, March 20, 2001

No, it is not true that Poe had sex with dead people. So lets just leave it, ok? He did in fact have sex with me last night in a dream. HE WAS GREAT!!!

-- Anonymous, March 26, 2001

I think we are allowed to our own oppion, I don't think he would----- But I also don't know. I was not alive when he was. I don't think we should be so perverted though. Come on---why don't you act your age? We should have some respect for the dead. I am studing him right now in English class and I think he was a great writer even though his life was rather sad.

-- Anonymous, April 10, 2001

In response to Unique Horn's message from Berenice, it is interesting that in the passage you quote, the character is curious about the dead woman, but makes no mention of having sex with her. The horrific idea that she might be smiling, still probably not indicative of any sexual activity, leaves him running away. Indeed, Poe was perverse, and in many stories, he seems to want to convince his audience that they, too, are perverse. It's a certain impulse that he thinks we all have. But Poe explains in "Phil of Comp" that the dead women is the most pitiable and sad of all images in literature. Someone else who previously commented was correct, the events of his life mirror this. He's sad because the women he was close to died! Did he want to have sex with them? Try to be mature about the issue. While it is true that Poe led an unusual life, and that he wrote about new topics, we have to focus on the fact that he invented the genres of detective/mystery as well as horror/fiction. If people began to surface rumors about him, it's because everyone is afraid of that which is different. For the uninformed, Poe never wrote anything about explicitly having sex with a corpse. And for the immature, try to become informed.

-- Anonymous, April 20, 2001

The ideas that everyone has put forth, whether crude or delicate by nature, inspire one to look beyond the limits of the natural to the supernatural. I personaly do not believe that Poe had personal relations with people in the deceased form. Poe was a different person, he had dealt with the death of his parents and the rejection of his caretaker, however with this in mind, this does not prove the idea that he slept with the dead. Even in his writing, although it is seemingly good good in insite, frankly, other writers have written from the position of a disturbed mind, but they themselves are prefectly healthy individuals. I believe that Poe is morbid genous, he took the world to a darker side of liturature however that only proves his writting to be fantastic, not the demise and destruction of his mind. I shall leave everyone with this idea --- Because Mary Shelly wrote about the monster Frankenstein created, did she create them herself, or how about the movies of today, The Mummy, do you think the writers of that really experienced some of their stunts and/or effects. I would beg to say not, however the world has more ideas because someone tried the darker side of the mind.

-- Anonymous, May 11, 2001

This question should die sometime I hope. It's like trying to say Poe was not a Martian. His ENEMY who started this rumor with a scathing and cowardly obituary was Rufus Griswold who actually was caught sleeping beside his own dead wife, more distraught than turned on I should add. Virgina was BURIED and never accessible. Nor did Poe slaughter people in spectacular fashion any more than any other writer of horror fiction(I hope). Accusing Poe of ANY overt sexual act outside of intimacy with a living Virgina is a tough sell for anyone that knows the poor guy's real relationship with women.

-- Anonymous, May 11, 2001

Poe knew ppl like u would wonder... coz it's a point of such a great importance... Anyways, he deliberately said: n , in I don't remember which tale... Perhaps : (lol I'm french). But we will just never know. That's y he must laughs, now, n he's right, we're so fuckin' human...

Read "Annabel Lee" - in that poem he clearly fantasises about lying down next to a corpse inside a tomb. If that ain't necrophilia I don't know what is.

Is this the place where I sign up to be the Redskins' Mascot?

-- Anonymous, July 10, 2001

well i did ask the same question myself because i was told by loads of people that it was true, even Steven King says it in his story 'The Long Walk'. I refused to believe them but I asked because I wanted to make sure. I LOVE Poe and I don't think that any of his stories or poems can prove that he practised necrophilia especially not 'Annabel Lee' which is one of the most beautiful and most emotional poem in the world. When we write we don't always write from ourselves but assume the character of another. however, if Poe wanted to do that sort of thing then good for him, it doesn't make any difference whatsoever to his wonderful work. I think we should all just leave the dead to die.

-- Anonymous, July 13, 2001

There are at least three major problems with the answers given here which endorse the absurd idea that Poe might been "having sex with corpses."

1) The narrator in "Annabel Lee" does not lie down inside the sepulchre. (She is in the sepulchre and the narrator next to it. The phrasing is unclear to modern eyes, but in Poe's day people regularly visited cemeterys, like parks. It would have been obvious that the actual bodies were well sealed and a violent act, not mentioned in the poem, would have been necessary to gain direct access). Furthermore, the poem is not about sex at all. (In keeping with the prudish tone appropriate to his era, Poe never wrote about sex, not even obliquely.) The idea that the narrator is engaging in any form of intimate contact with the corpse of his beloved is a truly horrific one, but the poem is about young beauty, undying love, loss and grief. Such an element of horror would have completely undermined the intended effect of the poem. The horrific reading is a purely modern one, imposed by our more jaded era, and our obsession with sexual matters. "Annabel Lee" was one of Poe's most circulated poems, accompanying literally hundreds of obituaries in the months following his death in October 1849. No one at the time felt that the poem was anything other than beautiful and lyrical.

2) "Annabel Lee" is not about Poe and although there is more than an echo of Virginia, it really isn't about Virginia either. Annabel Lee is a fictional character, an idealized female figure constructed from equal parts of women Poe knew, heard about, read about and merely imagined.

3) The closest suggestion of necrophilia in Poe's works is "Berenice," but again, Poe's fiction is not a roadway to his own personal life. Poe's fiction is, essentially, not autobiographical, in any meaningful way. Poe is not Roderick Usher. Poe is not a razor-wielding orang-utan (although Poe would have liked to be C. A. Dupin). Poe is not the narrator of any of his tales, even though he often wrote in the first person, which is merely a literary device. The autobiographical reading of Poe's works is the most superficial one possible, and one which misses the point that Poe is intentionally writing for an audience and largely ignores the greater palate from which Poe selected his colors and inspiration. It also ignores the historical record, which shows that Poe's use of his life in his works is usually little more than window-dressing.

In response to your inquiry as to whether or not our beloved author "had sex" with corpses, I am compelled to provide you with a resounding NO! He did, however, make love to them. For you see, at the at the height of his career, Edgar Allen Poe found himself in the midst of the most powerful sexual revolution in recorded history, led in great part by his now infamous Grandmother, the victorian matriarch, Queen Elizebeth. Poe, a moral giant who rapidly found himself amongst moral weaklings such as George Bernard Shaw and Jules Verne, was determined to keep his moral compass as indicting "true north". He has several monogamous relationships with the recently deceased during this period, but sadly, as his adored companions fell apart, so did the relationships. Emotionall devestated, he was forced by the Japanese crime syndicate known as the Yakuza, to marry his thirteen year old cousin or face having his legs shaved with a dull "Koizumiskai", what we would identify as a potato peeler. I hope this sets you straight my young friend.

-- Anonymous, November 21, 2002

Ok, we've all heard enough about the speculation regarding Edgar Allen Poe's necrophilia. I have heard conspiracy of an even zanier subject.

Edgar Allen Poe was black!!! He had to change his name so other people will take his poetry seriously, and when he began to get famous, he had to hire a white man to pretend it was him. This form of oppression doesn't only suck, it is too prehistoric for anyone to care about now! His big black cock had been raping me too long! This exploitation is unforgivable.

Can someone turn me over and tell Edgar i still love him?

I think this discussion is stupid. Poe is a thing of the past.

We should look forward, not backwards - Upwards, not forwards - And always spinning!!! spinning!! spinning!

"There once was an author called Poe,who wrote many stories of woe. They say that he, often, climbed into the coffin, with corpses he didn't know. Acts that most people dread, were not performed in his bed, and some might say, 'so, they could not say no', since all the sad victims were dead."
