Can someone direct me to information about the Street preacher (1850?) in San Francisco and any other missionaries like him there?

In his book "San Francisco Memoirs 1852-1899", Malcom E Barker devotes a chapter to William Taylor called "Shanghaied". Taylor was the I belive the first Methodist Bishop of California. When Temple Methodist Church built the huge Hotel/Church complex at Mc Allister near the current United Nations Plaza, it was named in his honor. It is now the dormitory for the Hastings College of Law of the University of California.

Taylor wrote two books about his time in SF. "Seven Years STreet Preaching in San Francisco" and "California Life Illustrated." Both are available on-line in "California--How I saw it" which I think is accessed through the Library of Congress website--I forget at the moment and can't find the reference in my notes. You might also be interested in another book called Heroes of the Holy Life wriiten by Wesley L. Duewel, published by Zondervan. One of the absolutely amazing stories in the book is on William Taylor who is in the same class as Moody and Booth but seems to have been ignored. It is stir a fire in you when you read it.
