Gas leak leaves Newport in cold By Courtney Kinney, Post staff reporterWater and gas line breaks have shut down gas service for almost the entire city of N ewport, leaving thousands of homes without heat for the next several days.
With cold weather expected for this weekend, ''that could be a problem,'' Cinergy spokesman Dave Woodburn said.
The pressure from a large water main at the Newport Shopping Center that burst early this morning broke a nearby gas line. Water flooded into the gas line - and possibly the whole gas system - and the gas had to be shut off.
The gas outage affects nearly all of Newport from the Ohio and Licking rivers to Donnermeyer Drive and Kentucky Road and Alexandria Pike.
It is possible that gas in a small part of Bellevue near Donnermeyer Drive will have to be turned off, said Bellevue City Administrator Don Martin.
No other cities appear to be affected.
