We finally got an egg!!!greenspun.com : LUSENET : Countryside : One Thread |
A little late in the year maybe, but at least we got one. I had to raise new hens this year after losing out old flock to the coyotes in the "Great Chicken Massacure" of '99. The new flock is comprised of an odd assortment of 49 cent odds & ends from out local Country General store. 8 out of the 10 we bought lived and we ended up with 4 hens and 4 roosters. The roosters (except for one lucky guy) make good dinners, but none of hens laid. We were figuring on butchering them too, but I found our 1st dark green yesterday. It was a much needed perk in my day!

Congratulations!!!!! I am waiting for my ducks to lay their first egg. I bought some chicks at the local farm store, ended up with all roosters. They have been yummy I might add though!! :-) I just bought some pullets, so perhaps in Spring I can get some chicken eggs. I was wondering, do you know..do gineas stop laying in the fall and winter?

Elle,Congratulations! The green eggs are the best! We have chickens that lay light brown and pink eggs too but the green ones somehow taste just a little better. Can't explain but it is true. You will see. Do you hens have green legs? Seems like our hens that have green legs lay green eggs . I am hopeing to get some of those marans. They are supposed to lay chocolate colored brown eggs. Neat!Hope tp find some before spring.
