What is the best way to make sure activities/lessons are in fact age appropriate?

The first thing is that you must, as a teacher, be familiar with the age group that you are teaching. The next thing is to be aware of educational standards that are being set for your age group of students. Evaluate your lesson very carefully. See if it is asking too much or too little. You should also be sure that it is suitable in all areas, cognitively, physically and socially. Make sure that all these areas of your lesson are age appropriate. In order to do this, you might want to recall past activities that you did with your students and think of what they struggled with and also think of where they surprised you by maybe surpassing your expectations. I think the thing that helps the most in knowing what is age appropriate is experience. The more familiar you are with a particular age group, the better judge you will be of what is and is not appropriate.

The best way is to try out all the materials/lessons yourself using different materials. They should included the different subject areas that cover counting.
