looking for info on Missouri

greenspun.com : LUSENET : Countryside : One Thread

I am new to the forum, and have abeen reading some of the old posts. Since we are donsidering moving, I have especially been looking at those asking for info about other states. I would like to get more info about MO, anything anyone would like to tell me is always nice. We have 4 boys, ages 17-12. We need to get them out into the country ASAP.

Since my husband is a plumber, which requires a license in most states, who should we contact to get info on the requirements for that state.

Are real estate agents the best to go through for finding property? If not, how should we go about it?

Thanks for any help. Amber

Amber, Look in the Older Messages under the Land thread. There is one called " relocating to Mo. possibly" that has a lot of information. I don't know about licensing for plumbers, I am not sure if there is a state license or city ones. Mona Lea

Amber, we recently moved to the ozarks of Missouri. If you are looking for low land prices, folksy neighbors and a slower pace of life this is the place. The taxes are low and in general the cost of living is lower than most places. It does have it's drawbacks however. If you aren't near one of the larger towns the wages are lower....sometimes much lower. Price of land usually has more to do with how close it is to employment than anything having to do with the land itself. We homeschool so the public schools aren't a problem but going by what most people have told me the public schools as a rule aren't as good as other places. The best place to look for land is on the internet. Do as many possible combinations of searches as you can think of. We did months worth of research on the internet before we found our little slice of heaven at the end of a dirt road. Oh and one more thing....if you buy land with a house on it inspect it well because people up here tend to take something that ought to be bulldozed and panel or paint it up to look nice when the structural integrity is really shot. If I can answer any questions let me know. If you want to look in the southcentral Mo area I'd be happy to recommend my realtor. Amanda

I emailed you...a possible lead for a job. and as far as buying a place...I would wait first...I know of a great littel place that might come up for sale in a few months...it hs five acres and has some improvements, including a well. Rents are usually cheap...depending on where you are.

Missouri has its ups and downs, but we find it mostly ups...at least in comparison to chicago!

Peace and blessings, Sarah

Look, I have lived in MO my whole life. I grew up about 70 miles south of Kansas City, lived in Columbia in the first half of the nineties, and have lived in northwest MO since. I am going to go back to my hometown as soon as my wife finishes college. I know of no other place where you can find good land for such a reasonable price. In northern and southern MO, the land that exists away from cities is great, but employment opps are few, unless you have practical skills. My advice is for you to visit the most out of the way places you can think of and ask some small-time realtors in person for whatever you want. MO is a great place to live, especially for country folk. If we could just stop urban sprawl, pollution, greed, neglect, factory farming, clear-cutting, and poetry. . .
