Director's Guild of America Theatre is located at 110 W. 57th street, 4 blocks from where I used to work, on 3rd Ave and 53rd street! I just might go to this one, and I notice Peter Chung is on the list of Notable Guests! Right next to Kunihiko Ikuhara, Director of Sailor Moon and co-creator of Revolutionary girl, Utena! (FROSTBITER!) Also, Neil Gaiman, creator/writer for Princess Mononoke, and Mitsuhisa Ishikawa president in production of Ghost in the Shell. What a cast, somebody in that group is bound to have a pencil. Beggers can be choosers, if you can get there! Tickets are for sale, and in NY god knows they go fast, so reserve now, if it's not too late...and thank you very much for a personal invitation, Peter Chung. You are definitely sooo charming.

you have to play the game I guess, even if Aeon isn't anime

Around here WE know Aeon Flux is beyond the 'anime' level, since it is one of a kind art, writing is up there with really important films, and philosophically honest, but... the NYC artworld, 5th Ave, Hollywood...exciting for anyone, Heck, even Van Gogh wasn't recognized but for his dear brother Theo. Play the game? Like Tiger Woods, it's only because you've got the eye, William. Surprising isn't it?

Looking at their website, I've realized that it hasn't been written up in the program yet, but the festival is planning to screen the first four episodes of Alexander in 35 mm. with English subtitles on Sunday, Oct. 8 at 3:30. That's the reason why I've been invited to appear.

For those in Southern California, a similar program of screenings is scheduled for the last two weekends in October at the UCLA theater, including a double feature of Blood and Vampire Hunter D on Halloween. Alexander, as far as I know, will not screen. I was planning to be there also, but my current workload may require me to be back in Korea. I'll post an update as my schedule develops.

I've just finished the sixth (and definitely my last) Checkers/Rally's spot and am currently doing a 45 second opening sequence for a new Korean computer role playing game. The short demo for my new animated feature project will not be ready before early next year.

I've always been a big fan of Yoshitaka Amano's work as well... I wish I could go. Ah, well... maybe some day.

Well, I can't go to this either, planes still take 8 hours to fly to NY from Phoenix. I can only make part of Sunday and I'd have to leave at noon for home, so I'd miss the whole thing, basically. However, this does not take away from the fact that this is a cool scene in NYC, it would've been a dream to go. Thanks Peter, for mentioning they plan to do it in L.A. as well. I hope to make it there.

You should, the last one was terrific. UCLA hosted a Studio Ghibli film festival last year (Nausicaa, Whisper of the Heart, & the little-seen Porco Rosso, among others), & it was a revelation. I'm posting this year's schedule, for anyone who might be interested:

On the 26th, "Utena: The Movie", screening with episode 3 of "Jubei-Chan, The Ninja Girl".

On the 31st, special Halloween screening of "Vampire Hunter D" (2000 remake), and "Blood: The Last Vampire".

On the 4th (November), screenings of new anime, including "Angel Links", "Tenamonya Voyagers", and "Mobile Suit Gundam: The 8th Team".

All I can say is, wow! What a lineup. All films are subbed, with the exception of D (John Lee, baby!). Oct. 26 is my birthday (!), so I'll try and assemble a posse IRL for Utena. Should be fun!

Paul, what day is Peter Chungs' work featured? That's the day I'd like to try and make it. Interesting, his comment about the opening sequence for the Korean computer role playing game. I assume this isn't therapy for couples, like John Gray's Venus/Mars' workshops, but an action game. I wish we could see it, darn, Korea is getting the cream lately. What do you make of the fact that his 'short demo' regarding the new animated feature will not be ready until early next year? To me that sounds like he's putting a lot of work into it, and it will be good. I personally will miss Holly, although I've never seen her animation/self. Seemed kind of a cute character. Happy birthday, maybe I'll see you there. P.S.: aren't you scared driving on those pretzel logic freeways out there?

-- Barb e. (Suesuesbeo@aol.com), October 04, 2000.

Believe it or not, I don't drive. I'm just a broke-ass 19-year-old (well, 20 soon), living at home and constantly blagging rides off my friends. I know cars are important, but right now I have my sights on other things, like college and a steady source of income (catch an issue of Lotus magazine for an example of my non-profit work). Besides, I rather like the novelty of being the one person in L.A. who doesn't drive. And I live within walking distance of UCLA, literally, just cross the street and you're there.

Sorry Barb, but Peter Chung isn't mentioned on the program, just the anime films. If he does show up, that'd be great. Regardless, I hope you're able to make it, the more the merrier, and you'll meet some cool people from the psy-trance scene!

-- Paul (gilbreathfamily@worldnet.att.net), October 05, 2000.

Ha ha, wouldn't it be funny if you ended up writing a great script and we read about how you were broke and walked across the street to your film classes, (and at night went on the computer to the A.F. forum).

-- Barb e. (Suesuesbeo@aol.com), October 05, 2000.

Heh, yeah, it'll be the next A&E special. Or, if I fall in with the wrong crowd, the E! True Hollywood Story.

-- Paul (gilbreathfamily@worldnet.att.net), October 06, 2000.

Wonder how the NY Anime festival went this past weekend, and if Peter enjoyed it? I hope some animation magazine had the forsight to photograph this event.

If you missed the chat with Peter Chung from the NY Anime Film Festival last friday (Oct 6) you can read the transcript here:

-- Sean Merli (smerli@earthlink.net), October 11, 2000.

Hey, this was fun to read, thanks for the reference. I hope MTV eventually makes Aeon Flux as an animated feature, as Peter would be involved, then we can see the potential of Aeon realized. Ooooh, can't you just imagine that one! BTW Isn't it nice Jason Wynn got credit for Trevor, instead of John Lee, who usually does, since he was the one who did the voice of Trevor Goodchild.
