It is with great sadness that I have learnt of the passing away of Mrs Edith Ming, today 06 September 2000. I joined the AME in 1976 and Bishop & Mrs Ming appointed to South Africa accepted my as a son of theirs during my time of trials and tributlation. It has been ever since that they made every effort to make contact with me when in South Africa or when I visited the United States. I shall always remember her for the encouragement she she gave and the inspiration in song ... I'm Somebody. I pray that God will indeed continue to be with Bishop Ming during his time of testing and that he will have a new song to sing to the glory of the Lord. Free at last ...

Connectional Church Mourns Passing of 1st District Supervisor

Sept. 6, 2000 - Ms. Edith White Ming, Episcopal Supervisor of the First District and beloved spouse of its leader, Bishop Donald George Kenneth Ming, passed away this week after a period of illness.

Ms. Ming has long been a stalwart of the church. A native of Pennsylvania, she graduated with honors from Mill Creek township High School, and attended Temple University School of Music. Ms. Ming received a B.S. degree and pursued graduate studies.

A gifted musician, Ms. Ming was in great demand as a pianist, organist, and vocalist. She was also a consultant in musical matters, and she contributed many selections to the AME hymnal.

Ms. Ming had been affiliated with the AME Church Commission on Worship and Liturgy, a member of Church Women United, American Guild of Organists, NAACP, the Association of University Women, and Music Educators National Conference.

The body of Ms. Ming will be viewed in Atlanta this week at Big Bethel AME. Funeral Services are tentatively scheduled for Sept. 11 at Big Bethel. Follow-on services in the First District will be announced.

I will forever remember Mrs Ming. I remember so well the day they set foot in Cape Town, South AFrica. The Welcome Services and reception was held at Bethel Memorial AME Church. Bishop and Mrs Ming had a love and sincere interest for the youth of the 15th Episcopal District. The youth was revived and re-energized under the leadership of Mrs Ming. Mrs Ming taught us songs, I'm somebody, Walk in the spirit, talk in the spirit, in everything that you do, do it in the spirit the holy spirit of God. She encouraged us in so many different ways. I will never forget the anthem that she taught a mass chior of more than 1000 voices, "I sought the Lord and He heard me, yea he delivered me out of all my fears". I saw Mrs Ming at the General Conference in Ohio and was delighted to spend a few hours with her just walking the halls. When I look back on it, I truely believe that she was saying farewell. I am saddened today about The passing of Mrs Ming, but in my heart I celebrate her life with thanksgiving to God for such a wonderful gift He shared with us. She always stood for that which was right and was not afraid to express it. She did not demand anybody to love her, to be loyal to her, or demand them to get along with her to be their friend. She had standards and convictions about what was right or wrong. Mrs Ming was educated, talented, and gifted in so many ways yet she was approachable, humble, and loved everybody as her brother or sister no matter what their status in life was. Mrs Ming loved and feared God, Her heart was fully devoted to Christ. She spoke with wisdom, She was discreet, She honored her husband and found her Work to be a Joy. I know she has found favor with God

I had the pleasure of meeting Mrs. Ming and Bishop Ming at a wedding in Atlanta in 1999 and I must say they were delightful. Mrs. Ming played the organ with a power and grace that could not be matched. You could see and feel her passion when you played the piano. I attended the Recording for Rev. Roderick Belin's album and she accompanied him on a few of the songs this past May and once again you could feel her passion come forth. I looked forward to her as our Episcopal Supervisor because I had always heard everyone refer to her as "Mother Ming" because of her Spiurit and passion. The first time I met Mrs. Ming, I she played the piano for a World Methodist Council meeting at Lake Junaluska almost 20 years ago. I was immediately her Number One fan... not only because of her wonderful musical expertise, but because her beautiful spirit was reflected in her music. It has been a joy to call Bishop and Mrs. Ming special friends for many years through our World Methodist Council association. I will never forget her admonition to "press on!" It is with great human sadness and much spiritual joy to learn that Heaven has a new angel. When I served as WMS Episcopal Public Relations Director from 1988-1992, I had the opportunity to work with Mrs. Ming. Her human touch and sensitive heart is what I remember most. She adored her husband and would always remind me to bring him some Florida mangos, whenever I'd attend a Connectional meeting. During one of her stays in Florida, she purchased a beautiful crystal elephant for me - a symbol of our college sisterhood as members of Delta Sigma Theta Sorority. I will cherish it as a token of her Christian touch. But what I remember most, was her kindness and the affection that Mrs. Cousin and Mrs. Cummings felt towards her. Bishop Ming, in your hour of sadness - Jesus wept - on Zion - Praise God, for Heaven has another angel.

We are saddened to learn of the death of Edith White Ming. Our prayers and deep sympathy are extended to her husband,The Right Reverend Donald George Kenneth Ming and their family members.

Mrs. Ming will be remembered for her many leadership contributions thoughout World Methodism, as a member of the World Methodist Council's, "Order Of Jerusalem", and for serving a five year term as President of the World Federation of Methodist and Uniting Church Women. Mrs. Ming's presence and participation always produced a joyful note. One of her favorite expressions was, "Press On".

My Aunt Edith has been called home to be with the Lord. We think about the scripture verse that says, "Take no thought for tomorrow, for tomorrow will take care of itself" (NIV), and as I reflect on this particular verse, I am reminded of the time spent with her a few days ago, when I visited her and my Uncle Donald at their beautiful home in Atlanta on Wednesday, 30th August, 2000. Shocked and sadden to here of her passing, only days after I returned back home to Bermuda. My Aunt was a wonderful and cheerful person.

It is with great sadness that I learned of the Passing of Mrs. Edith W. Ming.

I had the pleasure of knowing Mrs. Ming as a Connectional Officer in the Young People's Division. She always gave me great words of encouragement.

In May of 1999 while traveling in Atlanta, I had the opportunity to visit with Bishop and Mrs. Ming in their beautiful home. We had a wonderful conversation about the AME Church and the need for retaining and developing the talents of our youth and young adults.

After delivering the President's Address at the Quadrennial Convention , Mrs. Ming was the first person to congratulate me on a job well done -- and she whispered to me Continue to PRESS ON!

Thank you GOD for giving to the Church and the World a Lady of Grace, Love, Kindness, Strength and Music. She played in our hearts as she lived and we will remember her as she plays in the Kingdom.

Edith Ming was one of the most remarkable women I have had the privilege of knowing. Again and again in various parts of the world, I have been profoundly moved by her musical interpretations of the great hymns of the Faith as she played for World Methodist Council events. When we faced serious illness in our family, Edith sent me a copy of the hymn, "He Giveth More Grace," which meant the world to me, because that was what I saw in her life. As I have read and re-read those words, I always think of her trademark phrase, "Press On!"

Earth's loss is truly Heaven's gain... It is with sadness that I learn & contenplate the passing of Sister Edith Ming. I never actually met her however I saw she & Bishop Ming at the Lay Conference in Philadelphia back in July and was so impressed with their sparkle & commentary that my intentions were to write to them as soon as I returned home. That never happened, so she will never know that one little christian lady from Bethel/Milford, DE was truly proud, impressed and looking forward to their Episcopal direction as they bring forth to the 1st District direction from God.

My prayer is for the strength and peace of the Bishop and their family, for this personal loss is felt by multitudes, and God is yet with us and blessing us. It is also hoped that somehow the quality of their lives together be magnified and that the separation be minimized by the love and caring they were able to have during their physical time spent together. She touched so many lives with her smile and the Great Gift God gave her with her Music. I love to take pictures and she was always ready to smile and never once acted like it was a bother. I will remember her as always having time to talk as if she know you. I introduced myself to her again at the Annual Lay Meeting in Philadelphia and was really looking forward to working with her. Although I did not know Mother Ming by one-on-one conversation, she left you with a warm and protected feeling when in her presence. It was a delight to have been graced by her charmistic character. I pray that Bishop Ming, Pastors Kenneth and Cassandra Marcus and all of her friends that are experiencing sorrow know can FEEL her smile and the resounding words of PRESS ON carry them through the misty days ahead.

I am saddened to hear of the passing of Mrs. Edith White Ming. She was a very pleasant lady and a tremendous muscician. I remember hearing her play on the newly intstalled pipe organ at the Brookins Community AME Church,Los Angeles, in ?1993. As she approached the instrument her face lit up. Then she sat down with such excitement and literally caressed the keys with her fingers and the pedals with her feet. Then she leaned back, closed her and played that pipe organ with gentle exuberance. I can still envision her body peacefully rocking and swaying as she played.

A Tree among us has fallen. It was with great sadness that I learned of the death of Mrs. Ming. Mrs. Ming was a great individual who had a big influence on me and my development and growth in Afrian Methodism over the past four years. Mother Edith White Ming, though sadly missed, made the kind of impact on the lives of certain individuals she touched that transcends time, space, and circumstances. I am one of those persons. She graciously accepted, encouraged, and supported the "me" she came to know. I could not refer to her by any other title than "Mother." Upon the occasion of their Farewell Celebration at the Georgia Music Hall of Fame for the Macon Georgia Annual Conference, June 2000, these are the last sentences from the tribute I was privileged to give-- "Bishop & Mother Ming: We pray your strength, we applaud your work, and all the things you've done To help us continue in our stride to get the victory won. We love you both, you'll always have, places deep within our hearts, and please remember Bishop and Mother, Our paths are sure to cross. As you move onward and upward on your journey to give of all that's best. For here in the Macon Georgia Conference, we feel, we've done our best. Words cannot express the pain I felt (and still feel) as the result of Mrs. Ming's death. I keep remembering the many times she encouraged me with the words "Press On" - sometimes through written correspondence and other times through spoken words. I keep remembering how she taught me (very gently) how to be an effecient Annual Conference Secretary by critiquing the minutes and making all the necessary corrections in information, grammar, sentence structure and all. She made sure that each person who earned the right to be listed in the minnutes was listed. I am thankful to God that I had an opportunity to let her know this past Annual Conference, before she and Bishop left the Sixth Episcopal District, how much I appreciated her for her guidance in this area.

She was a real blessing to me during my recent illness. Always making sure she encouraged me in so many ways. Her attention to my needs played a major role in my healing process.

Then, in my ministry. What a blessing Bishop and Mrs. Ming were to me. They gave me so many opportunites to exercise the gifts that God has given me. I do realize that Bishop Ming, as Bishop - directed by God, had the final say in my promotions in this Great Zion, however I could always see the sincere approval and happiness each time I received an assignment or a promotion. Under this great "Ming Team" I was able to leave my secular employment as an Administrative Assistant in the School System and serve the Church in full-time ministry, as I was blessed with the appointment to The Wrens Chapel AME Church where I served seven years - then - before they left GA - I was blessed as Bishop Ming appointed me the first female Presiding Elder in the State of Georgia. As I received the appointment, I shall always remember the joy on Mrs. Ming's face as she stood and embraced me with a warm hug. At the General Conference in Cincinnati, she encouraged me to do well - to "Press On". I shall strive to make sure I never disappoint her and Bishop Ming.

I am hurt, very hurt. Yet I believe Mrs. Ming is still smiling and still in her spirit saying "Press On - for it is Well With My Soul."

Bishop Ming has my utmost appreciation, love and prayers. I wish to encourage Him as his "Dear Edith" encouraged us, "PRESS ON" - God still has plans for your life. Not to hurt you but to do you good, to prosper you, to give you hope, and to give you a future.(Jeremiah 29:11)

We are sad to hear about the passing away with Mother Edith Ming, and wish to encourage Bishop Donalg G K Ming and family to be strong in the Lord. Bishop and Mother Ming came to Namibia in 1976, a time of apartheid in southern Africa! Everybody agrees that they lifted the entire 15th Episcopal District, and gave us back our sense of identity. Yes, he preach on themes of liberation and freedom and she sung "I am somebody". They taught us that, "if it's to be, it's up to me". The Mings built more churches in their term of office that no other Bishop could repeat. The Mings respected local leadership and teamed up with us. Whatever projects and programs they touch, one could see God's finger prints on it. The number of children they took for tertiary education in the USA has never been equalled! The 15th Episcopal District and especially the Namibia Annual Conference are proud to have been associated with Bishop and Mother Ming. We memorialised Mother Ming's life in the Memorial Service of the Namibia Annual Conference millennium session that was held from September 5 - 10, 2000 at the Bethel Memorial AME Church, Luderitz. They are the only, the only couple on the Episcopacy that kept coming back to Africa, that continued their interest and work in Africa beyond their official quadrennial. Look at Bishop Donald G K Ming's involvement in the new Wilbeforce institute, raising funds from the US government to rebuild this dream / vision. Look at their involvement in Namibia, the number of Awards and honorary degrees awarded to the founding fathers and mothers (even an honorary degree to our National President, Dr. Sam Nujoma!). We stand on God' promise, for God is not a human to lie, that surely, surely like Jesus Christ resurrected from the death, also Mother Edith W Ming will be resurrected, and believe you me, it will not be the trumpet sound for her, but the harmonious music of the organ, that will put life back in her. I met Mother Edith Ming following the period I served as a missionary with the Late Bishop Frank Madison Reid, Jr. and Mrs. Irene B. Reid in the 14th Episcopal District. Years later, while working on a project at Clark Atlanta University I had occasion to call Mother Ming and left a message. When I called back and she came to the phone, I began with the usual, "You probably don't remember me," she remarked, "but I do." And she did! Like others, I am stunned by our loss, but encouraged by her subsequent note following our telephone conversation, to PRESS ON. And I will! In closing, my heart goes out to Bishop Ming, but as they say in Liberia, "We loved her, but God loved her best."

Although I, personally, did not have the privilege of knowing Mother Ming for very long, I came to know that it doesn't take long to recognize sincerity and truth and love--qualities of this angel who was called from labor to reward. Mother Ming was an inspiration all of us at St. Paul A.M.E. in Valdosta, Georgia. Our heartfelt prayers are offered for Bishop Ming, who must find the strength to go on without his beloved Mother Ming and for all of us who must keep striving to please God as she did. Mrs. Ming was a great lady with trmendous faith. No matter how bad things got she will always say "PRESS ON" in the way only she can say. As a young preacher lots of things came up. the problem with me being to young to be admited to the annual conference. And when i thought things could not get any worse. she came to me and said what ever god has ordained to be it will be. and i took those words and as she said "PRESS ON" and I kept going.

So Bishop Ming take the words of sweet sweet Edith Ming and "PRESS ON".

I am a niece writing a book about the Late Mrs. Edith Ming and her sisters Mrs. Norris and Mrs. Lofton. I was fortunate to spend two summers living and traveling with the Mings. I invite all of you who knew her and would like to share your experiences with her to send me your story. From Africa, Singapore, Bermuda, Lousiana, Georgia, New York, Pennsylvania etc. The book is about how three sisters brought up as primarily the only blacks in rural Pennsylvania conquer the world with class, as well as dedicate their entire life serving Our Father God.
