edgar, had a way of expressing him self, he used writing, much like i do, people were not like him, he had a way different way at the picture of life, god has given him a gift, a gift that people will rememer for awhile, see, edgar is like me, me and him think the same way, we will never fit in to the world, cause people will reject our minds and the way they work, we have both been hurt to badly to bandage out wounds, no bandages could fix them, they are permanent wounds, they are emotional wounds, just try to understand people like us, we dont come around very often, life without us, is like a bird who cant sing, bye guys, and live a good life

i know this is a lot later than when you asked the question but if your still interested i believe he never got over his first love with this lady i think her name was agnes. he went to war when he was young and met her when he was injured. he went back home believing she would be his wife but she almost went with another guy. She stopped herself at the last moment realizing she loved poe more and so she tried to get back with him but he was too hurt by her leaving in the first place. he became totally depressed from that. although later he got married i still think he loved her the whole time. he knew he could never be with her again so he wrote stories that reflected his pain.

Edgar Allan Poe was an amazing writer who was not afraid to expose the world for what it really was !!!! I am a follower of Poe's writings , Everything I have ever written in the last three years has been inspired by him ! Poe wrote the way he did because of his cat pluto,Pluto was a evil cat that tried to kill poe by tripeing him and trying to burn him.so poe tried to kill the cat by hanging it and cutting it's eye out and hanging him BUT!!! When Poe was born, the doctors implanted a seed in his ass. While he grew up, the seed started to sprout into a tree. This really pissed him off. I mean, hell, there was a tree growing from his ass. His wife couldn't see herself walking about with a man and his ass-tree, so she killed herself. If he had kids, they killed themselves, too. I sure would. Poe had always thought about cutting the tree or chopping it into some fancy shmancy artwork, but, he started to grow with it. Eventhough, he was an angered writer, he liked the uniqueness of a tree growing out of HIS ass, and no one else's. When he got older, though, he went just plain mad. Sucks to be a man with a tree in his ass, I tell ya. I wouldn't know, but I could just imagine walking into my house and my dad dropping dead from too much laughing. We wouldn't want that, now, would we?

I think he has such a depressing life because, his family had problems, all the abuse of drugs, alcohol. I know how it feels to be growning up wit that because then you feel all depressed, and writing peoples are how you could get everything out, and stories to expess your emotion.

because poe was a whining little slutbag lush who couldnt bear with the harsh realities of life...(smiles) seriously: a combination of his own experiences and his own fucked up perception of the world. gothic poetry was popular during his era, and he left an even more profound mark in blowing it up. anyway, nothing can affect our emotions in literature as much as depressing poems and stories can...most ppl dont write when theyre really happy, and when they do feel inspired to write about happy experiences or thoughts its not really felt as much.

Its your own interpretation to if you think his work really is depressing, some just find it dark and deep, not necessary depressing, maybe if you realized that life isn't all candy and roses, you could realize, he was just talking about how the world really is. Also, if you made some effort to research a little about his life, you might realize the kind of life he lead, the experiences he went through, that caused him to be the memorable man he is today.

The reason why Edgar Allen was so depressed when he wrote was because he went through a lot of stuff when he was younger.He married his own cousin when she was 13 years old and when she dien he always went down to see her where she was barried at.

All of the things in his youth and the child hood that he remembers had to do with dakrness...his mothere was ill alot of his life as he was there to watch her suffer...he saw it all...and the relationship he had with his father wasnt the best either...and at one point when he was writing and was very well known...it then changed to a different point of writing in society, that was when he was writing for the newspaper and magazines, he did reviews...very daring he did so...because the way he grituqed the writers that were well liked and respected. The point I suppose he wrote dark tales because it was a reflection of memory...his childhood... perhaps that is the reason...I guess we will never know...all I know is he writes magnificently!!....

he had a sad life. lost his mum his dad... his foster dad disowned him.. his wife was his cousin... she burst a vain in her head and became an invalid and then died 5 yrs later. he got into drug and alcohol abuse and shit.. and it just messed him up. the poor bloke had some pretty big issues in his life :(

theres no 'reason' why he started writng , thats something that in a person, its a form of expression just like music art etc. Perhaps you should focus instead on 'what' he wrote and mabey 'why' he felt the way he did. Most of the people here, I deduce, are sad and sorrowful teenages who think they have had a tough life and think they can relate to Poe. Everyone can handle different amounts of pain, but complaining about it and being a morbid bastard will only make things worse.

On the subject, it is something that no-one can know for sure because no-one knows him. You can guess and come up with a theory from research, but that is something you should do.
