Who's your favorite Real World cast member?
-- Anonymous, September 06, 2000
I have two favorites. Jamie and Melissa.
-- Anonymous, September 06, 2000
Superficial favorite is Danny cuz he's such a cutie. I really like Julie and Kelley though. Julie is great because she seems like she's there to learn about the world in general. It's probably the first person who wanted to go on the show for that purpose. And Kelley is so determined and I like that about her.

Well, even though I wouldn't want to consort with her in real life, I think it's wonderful that Julie is letting go of her stringent mormon principles to the point of saying that Mardi Gras is fabulous because it's about celebrating sin. I think that made the world just the slightest bit better.
If we're talking about who I'd actually want to hang out with, I'd have to go with Danny, mostly because...I dunno, I guess gay guys like gay guys as company? Though Jamie strikes me as interesting as well. So I suppose my "favourite" would be between those two. Melissa is my least favourite; she really grates my nerves and I think she does a lot of talking without saying anything, if that makes sense (e.g. when she was talking about people "owning their blackness" in order for it to be okay for them to say nigger. I got her point; that you have to *be* black, but what is "owning one's blackness" supposed to *mean*? [that was rhetoric

ooo... kelley & danny would have to be my faves. david and matt just bite. does *any* body like matt?! and what about you katie? your favorite real worlder?
-- Anonymous, September 06, 2000
I like Matt. I like the way he thinks. (from what they've shown us, anyway.)
-- Anonymous, September 06, 2000
I happen to love Matt. He's not my favorite though. Melissa is.
-- Anonymous, September 06, 2000
I like Melissa, too. She's kind of overdramatic, but I think it's hilarious. Second favorite is Julie, or "Morman chick who's always crying," as I usually call her. What's the deal with David? He's hardly ever on there.
-- Anonymous, September 06, 2000
For the record, I hate Matt. Damn he annoys me.
-- Anonymous, September 06, 2000
melissa's my favourite too. I think she's quite funny. she may be wild and sorta hyper, but that's what makes her interesting to watch.the rest sorta get me bored after awhile. I'm sure they're okay in person...I just don't care too much.
david's the black muscly one right? I keep forgetting his name. anyway, the only thing I liked about him was that hilarious song [the "be my baby tonight" one] he did for that tv show premiere dealie. I actually laughed out loud!

I like Kelley and Julie the best. I think they're the most down to earth, NORMAL ones. Melissa, I don't like her one bit. Does anyone remember Flora from Miami. She reminds me of her. My favorite character on the Real World of all time would be Sarah on Miami. She is just like me. yep
-- Anonymous, September 07, 2000
I love that episode where Melissa starts screaming at Julie -- "I don't give a FUCK about your Mormonism!" God, she kills me.
-- Anonymous, September 08, 2000
I love Melissa, from the Miami cast. I mean, in one point or another, I can see myself in her acts. It's sooo stange....
-- Anonymous, September 11, 2000
I like Danny... too bad he's gay... he's so hot. Melissa seems funny, but kinda fake. David pisses me off Matt.... okay, but weird... and extremely picky Jamie. i dont know really... im indefferent

I was going to respond to James's obvious flamebait about how the world is better because Julie's growing beyond her Mormonism, but then I realized it's worth neither the time nor the effort. That said, Julie is my favorite from New Orleans and possibly of all time. Keep in mind I've never really been into Real World (and Road Rules just sucks) and I'm only familiar with the past two or three seasons. From Hawaii I like Colin, Amaya, and Kaia (I think that's her name -- she's the one who had no boobs but was always topless). Tek annoyed me, and that was *before* he went on to be a MTV VJ. I also kinda liked the one girl from a few years ago who had Tourette's -- Flora from Miami?
At any rate, Julie's my favorite because she's so REAL. I identify so much with her quest to figure out who she is and where her faith fits into her life, and it seems that's a struggle many young people (and even old people) are faced with, which would probably explain why so many people like her.

damn, real world is still around?

Tim,
My comment about Julie was not intended to be inflammatory. She was beginning to have an open mind and question her beliefs, think about what she really believed was true rather than just taking whatever Mormonism said 'cause Mormonism Says So, and I definitely think that makes the world better, especially because she will likely go on to encourage other people to think about their beliefs as well. My comments were entirely positive towards Julie and other people who think, and yes, my opinion of people who don't think or question is negative, and I don't think there's anything wrong with that in the least.

James,First, I apologize for bringing up a comment made eight months previous. I was out of line to take a shot like that out of the blue, and it was certainly unfair to put you on the defensive for something said so long ago. I also apologize for not replying sooner, though the fallout from the Crisis I debacle prevented me from reading your response until now.
Second, upon rereading your September comment, I find I'm not exactly sure what I took offense to. I suppose that at the time I thought you were saying the world was a better place because yet another person was moving toward leaving religion behind, and I interpreted that as a slam on people who possess religious and/or spiritual beliefs. I see now that that's not what you were getting at.
I agree with you that it's important to question your beliefs, and this applies to areas other than religion as well. That is probably one of the major reasons why so many people are disassociating themselves from organized religion, as they find that too many vital aspects of the various faith-based systems are, to them, pure bullshit. (Read that however you like, as I'm sure there are as many interpretations of that sentence as there are people who will read it.) People no longer want something so personal, and by extension their very being, to be defined by a certain set of rules that are oftentimes so rigid as to discourage the sort of individuality our society allegedly craves.
Again, my apologies for dredging up and then misinterpreting something said a long time ago. (And my apologies to everyone else for taking this thread so far off topic.)

I'm sure most religious people would tell me that the world is better off with religion. Would I be offended by that? No. There's nothing wrong with criticizing someone else's beliefs.
